Midwest University Experts
Call for Swift and Public
Dissent From Radical
Coin Experimentation
CHICAGO, Not. 8. VP) Twelve
midwest university professors versed
tn economics, money and banking, to
day called for a "swift and public
dissent to what they termed "radical
experimentation with our currency1
by the national administration.
They declared in a statement pub.
llshed in the Dally News that the
administration's monetary policy Is at
error because "the gold content of
the dollar la relatively unimportant
in general price restoration when
compared with bank credit actively at
work."
"It Is now assumed In Washington
that the price of gold and the prices
of other commodities move automat
ically In the same direction," the
statement said. "And apparently that
there Is too much gold In the dollar
to get the benefit of a higher price
level.
' Gold Complicated.
"The relationship of gold to prices
is complicated and Indirect. It Is a
sobering thought that the 1026 price
level was based on a gold dollar of
the old weight. The high prices of
1926 were not due to manipulation
of the gold weight of the dollar, but
were dependent upon a broad use of
bank credit.
"Tinkering with the monetary unit
will not remedy deepscated economic
maladjustments."
"Individual enterprise can not m
encouraged by erratic changes In
fundamental costs or by unpredlct-
, abl fluctuations In the value of
money," the statement continued.
"There Is no point In Insisting on
a return to the old gold parity, but
a scheme to depreciate the dollar to
uncertain limits by the deliberate use
of government Influence does not In
spire confidence.'
Return of Gold Needed,
They ajggesttd a return to a mod'
ernlsed gold standard with explicit
agreements concerning the rules of
management. They said auch a re
turn to gold would provide "ample
room for sound experimentation with
our monetary institutions."
"The establishment of confidence In
the monetary unit la only a first
step toward recovery," the statement
said, "The maintenance or national
credit unimpaired and the assurance
of a smooth flow of Investment funds
to satisfy the capital needs of enter
prise are further steps in the restora
tion of business and employment."

A large, refrigerated meat room
with a capacity of 30 beeves Is now
In operation at the west side store
of the Groceteria Super Pood Mar
kets, according to W. A. Gates. A
five-ton refrigerating machine cools
this large room, which is maintained
at a temperature varying from 39 to
85 degrees through a thermosatlo
control. This system Is also com
plete with automatic defrosting.
Beef that Is sold by the Groceteria
Super Pood Markets will be held In
thtA cooling room from 13 to 31 days
so that the "fresh" meat taste will
be done away with.
Patrons of the Groceteria Super
Pood Markets have been advised by
Mr. Gates and Mr. Lydlard to Inspect
this cooling room so that they may
ar how beef Is handled before being
cut and placed In the Webber dis
