PALATE TICKLER
What art southern Oregon pears
good for? Is a question that has been
answered In many tongues during re
cent years, tad In many fancy cMahes
concocted to tickle the taste buds
in the world's big mouth. But It
took Dr. Oeorge Schumacher of this
city to answer It with "the staff of
life." That's the latest pear by
product on the market today, ladles
and gentlemen pear bread.
Baked In the Schumacher ovens.
several loaves were handed out this
week to connoisseurs of cuisine. The
report was. "fine food.' and there
was a rumor floating aboufc the town
today to the effect that "It will be
groat with beer." For there's a little
rye and a little wheat mixed In with
the pear flour to complete the loaf.
It's nutritious, healthful bread and
promises to form an Important chan
nel for consumption of cull pears
Dr. Schumcaher haa been Interested
for many years In the development
of by-products to eliminate the food
waste now existing in the pear In
dustry. Many products, previously
promoted, fell Into the luxury classi
fication. The bread constitutes a
staple food, and although still In
the experimental stages, success la
predicted for H by many people who
are sincere In advocating advance
ment of the pear loaf.

E WOOL '
T DESIRABLE
NEW YOUK, Not. I. () The
kind of wool which kept the care
woman warm may be widely worn
soon by her modern daughters,
through a discovery announced to
the United States Institute for tex
tile research tfrfsy.
This wool Is 'Xemp.' which textile
manufacturers have regarded, aa
"dead," and carefully sorted out be
cause It does not take dye welL
Discovery that It Is not dead, but s
"throw-back1 to prim in tire sheep,
and that It can be dyed beautifully,
was msde at Massachusetts Institute
of Technology.
Primlntlve sheep of the cave wom
an' epoch, had two coats of wool.
One was Inner fleece, the other an
outer coat of halra highly resistant
to cold. When man began to manu
facture woolen goods this outer coat
would not dye well, so he called It
"kemp" and began to breed It out
of sheep. Tufte of It sttU perslat.
Putting the kemp under high
power microscopes at the Massachu
setts Institute, Prof. E. R, Schwartz
found It smoother than 'the more
highly prized wool, and Its interior
structure quite different. It has a
core of cell? arranged like those of
a honeycomb. Ah packed in and
around these cells prevents dye from
penetrating them.
But by Ironing the air out of the
kemp hairs they take the dyes more
freely than normal wool.
