Sotkern Funeral Rites
Kept Strictly Private
NEW YORK. Oct. 30 (APWThe last rites for E. H. Sothern,
who devoted a lifetime to audiences will be performed without one.
Broadway celebrities anxious to do honor to the memory of the street's
great romantic actor would have filled Manhattan's largest church
but Julia Marlowe has decreed otherwise.
After the news of the 73-yesr old
actor's death from pneumonia
Saturday was made public yesterday,
his wife announced that the serv
ices would be private, attended only
by herself and Intimate friends. Even
the time and place of the funeral
was withheld. The body will be cre
mated. When Sothern retired In 1030 he
brought to a close a stage career
of half a century. Ho has atnrtcd
life aa a painter and became the
best-known Shakespearian ".ctor of
his time.
He was born In New Orleans on
December 0, 1RS0, the son of an
English actor, Edwin Askew Sothern.
His fsther determined that Sothern
should be a painter, end educated
him accordingly. But the boy fie-
cumbed to the footllght lure In his
blood. Success was assured when
Ir. 1885 Daniel Prohman asked him
to Join his famous Lyceum company
as lesdlng man.
By the time he turned to Shake
speare In 1900 he was already a tra
dition of the stsge. Ir. that year
he played Hamlet with success both
In New York and on the road. Tiie
next season he created his famous
role of Francois Villon In "If I Were
King." During thst next quarter of
century It remained perhaps his
most euccesful vehicle. Another wss
"The Prisoner of Zcnda."
In 1004 he formed the famous
partnership with Julia Marlowe.
They played together until 1007. In
cluding a season In London, in
1010 Sothern and his first wife.
Virginia Harned, were divorced and
he married Miss Marlowe. In 1013
they announced their retirement, mi
grated to England and bought a
home.
But the lure of the stage was too
strong. They returned to It together
agsln and again. Finally Mies Mar
lowe did retire In 1024. but Sothern
appeared until 1030, when a heart
attack finally forced him to end his
brilliant career.
