FOR FRIDAY GAME
WITH TIGER TEAM
By tlAROI.D GROVE.
Reports from Klamath Falls Indi
cate that the Pelican are working
hard to round Into shape for the
Medford Tigers Friday In that city,
and that the Pellcana will not be a
push over. So fnr this season the
Pelicans have held their own. Re
cently they held the strong Corvallls
high school squad to a 0 to 0 tie.
Corvallls ha defeated Eugene high,
rated a state contender.
After the defeat of Marshfleld
the local squad I going through like wildcat to keep from going down
their dally two and a half hours of
practice cheerfully. The win over
Marahfleld put new life in the squad.
It acted us' a tonic to both the inex
perienced and experienced players.
Those that were Inexperienced gstned
a feeling of self-assursnce. They are
no longer scared of making a mistake
or to fight when sent Into the game.
They have learned that no matter
how much experience a player has,
he must posses the spirit of the
game and have the ginger to back
It up.
Coach D. K. Burgher and Assistant
Coach B. M. Klrtley are drilling the
boys hard on grid tactic. Mr. Bur
gher snd Mr. Klrtley both stated that
the only way Medford ha been able
to atay on the winning side of the
Southern Oregon football ledger Is
by hard fighting in the, games and
hard, energetle practice In prepara
tion. Although Klamath I nit rated
very high this year in comparison of
scores, she does possess a lot of big.

With One Shot
That little saying about killing
two birds with one stono will have
to bo revised slightly, for today's
edition. It Menu that 1. d.
Morthland of the Medford Flower
shop waa pheasant hunting In the
Talent district yesterday, and with
one shot brought three fine pheas
ants down.
He didn't shoot a second time,
for fear of being arrested. For
two shots equal six birds, when
there should be only for to oom

for the required number of points.
The football benefit show for the
purpose of supplying new football
equipment for the Tlgen will be
held tomorrow night. First show at
7 p. m. Ask any member of the team
or the writer of this story about the
tickets.

year, but finally the truth concern
ing Irvine War burton 'a loss of 13
pounds In weight the first day of
football practice in 1932 is out.
".Scooter" Warburton, University of
Southern California's 140 pounds of
quarterback, can safely tell about It
now that he is the first string alter
nate on the Trojan team this year.
"I had always heard that Coach
Howard Jones wouldn't consider a
quarterback unless he was big," aid
Scooter, "so I waited until no one
was looking and after tipping the
scales at 148 wrote down 161 after my
name.
"When I weighed in again after
practice, BUI Hunter, the athletic dV
rector, was there, snd I couldn't do
anything about It. He looked at me
kind of funny, but never said any
thing. "I dln't say anything either. We
Just let it go at that."
The tow-headed San Diego youth
whose wild runs were Important fac
tors In the defeat of Notre Dame
and Pittsburgh last year, admits that
he became rather obese after work
ing in the motion picture studios the
past summer.
Hunter was on hand when ho came

but It didn't last long. Scooter Is
back to 145, the weight at which he
won the state quarter-mile title sev
eral years ago and the same weight
at which he ran on the Trojan relay
team last spring.
So, explains Warburton, the add
ed weight won't cut his speed down
much. He Is a Junior this season,
which Trojan opponents of next year
probably will regret very much.
