BEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, BEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1933
BUSINESS SHIFT
Petti of a definite shift of the
business center of Medford from Main
treat, unless widening and lighting
of the atreet la accomplished In the
near future, were Tolced today by a
number of citizens, advoctlng the
proposed widening of East Main halt
ed Tuesday night by the filing of
protests with the city council.
A tendency of business to drift
from the long-time center of actlT-
lty la already noted. Mayor E. M.
Wilson aald today. Unless the street
la Improved, numerous property own-
suffer greatly and a new section de
mand all progresslTe business. Fre
quent complaints have come to him,
many of them inslM'.ng upon early
lighting of the street, which cannot
be economically accomplished until
the atreet is widened.
The program proposed for Improve
ment of the street provided for the
widening of Bear creek bridge by the
city at a cost of M.0O0 and the wid
ening of East Main from Front to
Almond, exclusive of the bridge, by
the property owners, at a cost of
13,000, the complete project to cost
16,000. The sum to be furnished by
the city was Included In the last
budget and two preceding It.
The unit coat to property owners
was estimated at 1150 per 80 -foot
frontage.
A number of property owners who
signed the original petition advocat
ing the improvement, filed protests
Tuesday night.' The city having
agreed to widen the bridge with the
understanding that the property own
ers would widen the street, lmmedl
ately became reulctant reaardlng ex
penditure of the $4,000. The matter
was, as a result, referred back to the
committee, which had not met to
consider the matter further today.
If the atreet Is to be Improved.
Mnyor Wilson pointed out today,
lighting and widening should be ac
complished at the same time as put
ting the lights In now and widening
later, would cost the city a double
am o vmt of money. The lighting of
the street must be accomplished Jn
the near future If business is to be
retained by the section, the police
department emphasized last Tuesday.
