myatery abroad In Montana a miss
ing character puzzle that dates back
several million years, but nevertns'
less U more thrilling to scientific
minds than the newest detective
thriller.
The mystery may be summed up
In a single question: "Whit. If sy
thing, happened to primitive man In
Montana?
Investigators have no Idea what
sort of chap primitive man In Mm
tana might have been, for the past
has furnished no description or clue
to his appearance,
In Montana, northern Wyoming and
the Canadian province of Alberta a
perfect geologic record of progress and
change from the earliest times Is
available. Conditions during the age
of reptiles, before that age. and later,
Then marine life and mammals msde
their sppesrsnce, and finally through
the periods of glaciers down to moil
rn times may be atudled from the
exposed rocks and fossils discovered.
Somewhere along the line primitive
man logically might have put In his
appearance. The most painstaking
research, however, haa failed to reveal
single clue to his presence.
Dinosaur flnda have been numer
ous In Montana, Wyoming and Al
feerts. In 1930 a group of Princeton
dentists found fragments of a dino
saur en. the second ever unearthed
Hot Chapman Andrews found the only
other known dinosaur egg In the Oob!
desert In 1023
Bemsrksbly well preserved skeletons
of the tyranosaurus rex, king of an
dinosaurs, the camptosaurus and hop.
Iltosaurus have been dug up In Mon
tana.
Dinosaurs lived 80,000.000 to 100,'

cepted estimates.
From Beartooth Butte, near the
summit of the Beartooth mountain
of southern Montana, Investigators
this aummer took the first two com
plete skeletons of armored fish aver
found. These fish, snd a type mown
a lung fish, also found In the butts,
were among the earliest vertebrstes.
The next sge In mammalary devel
opment has been trsced from finds
near Cody. Wyo., south of .the Bear
tooths. Here remains of the eohlp
pus, or four-toed horse, and of anci
ent tapirs have been unearthed. A
corresponding Montana find was that
of the akull of a sabre-toothed tiger
(n a cave near Bowler, Mont.
From here on the fossil snd geo
logic record becomes confused. Some
time later glaciers descended on much
of Montana, and covered all of Al
berta, scientists believe. Many experts
hold there simply was no human life
In the area before or during the gla
cial period, and that man first enter
ed the region from Asia, by way of
the Bering Straits.

new automobile retailing code, which
will be ready for enforcement under
the National Recovery act within 10

pass, vloe-presldent, and Clyde Eakln
of Medford, aecretsry-treaaurer.
The executive enforcement com
mittee Is composed of H. L. clsycomb
of Ashland, Bex Baxnett of Grant
Pasa and W. W. Allen, Walter Abbey
and P.. A. Skinner of Medford.
All dealers of thla district will be
called into Portland, when the new
code arrives, It wss pointed out at
the meeting, and plans to attend the
northern session In a body were dis
cussed. -
Dealers of Jackson snd Josephine
county devoted time st the meeting,
held st Nandle'a In this city, to prep
arations for receiving snd working
under the new code, which will brlns
msny chsnges.
The meeting wss the first held by
dealers of the two counties to affect
an association.

Forty-three of the 40 atatee hid

a survey shows. Special e salon were
held in 16 states, are at present belna;
held In three other atatee, and are to
be called In aeven atates.
Many Issues.
- Taxation, relief, liquor control and
beer have been subject conaldered at
nearly all the legislature called Into
special seulons. Oregon' regular eea
ion of 60 days waa one of the longest
in the history of the atate. It was
preceded by a epeclal five-day aelon.
Only three legislature Wyoming,
Oeorgla and Idaho were on duty
shorter period than Oregon'. Wy
oming lawmaker aat 40 day. Ses
sion lasted 69 day in Oeorgla and
Idaho. Sixty-day elona were also
held in Arkansas, Florida, New Mex
ico, South Dakota, Utah and Wash
ington. Massachusetts legislature, which
sat for 300 dava. was the loiuzest this
year. The Wisconsin lawmaker werj
on the Job 197 day. Illinois 179
Michigan 166, New Hampshire 164
Connecticut 150.
Utah, Arizona Busy.
Utah and Arizona, in addition to
regular sessions, each ha already had
two special legislature this year.
Utah had special sessions lasting 7
and 34 days. In addition to the 60
day regular term. Arizona.' regu
lar legislature lasted 6.1 days, the
special ones one and 33 days.
Other atate which have had or are
having special meetings of lawmakers
are Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado,
Oeorgla, Idaho, New York. Oklahoma,
Rhode Island, South Dakota, Ver
mont., Virginia, West Virginia, Ken
tucky, Ohio and Texas.
Longest was Alabama's, lasting 74
day. Special legislature are expect
ed to meet thla fall In Jowa, Illinois,
Kansas. Michigan, Mississippi, Mis
souri, Oregon and Pennsylvania.
ENDEAVOR RALLY
Crater Lake Christian Endeavor
Onion will hold a pep rally In the
Ashland Presbyterian church this
evening at 8 o'clock. Reverend Krlbea
of Rogue River will lead the devo
tional service. Rev. W. R. Balrd of
Medford will give several readings.
A business meeting will be held
after the rally. Main topics for dis
cussion wilt be the coming union con
vention, to be held in the Phoenix
Presbyterlsn church early In Decem
ber. The new Progressive Christian En.
deavor plan will be discussed and
adopted. In the past, the union's
progressive plan waa called the Anal
ysls plan; It was chsnged to a better
and simpler plan, now called the Pro
gressiva plan.
Business which wsa not taken up
at the last meeting and additional
material will be discussed.

Mother Killed
In Auto Smash
BUTTE, Mont.. Oct. 0.HP) Mrs.
Tony Meis, 30, of Bonner Ferry. Ida.
was dead, her eight-year-old son Luke
was in a Butte hospital, critically In
jured, and her husband and five other
children were suffering from shock
and superficial Injuries today,a a
result of an automobile accident 38
miles east of here.
