CHINESE BEER MUG
WASHINGTON (UP) The ancient
Chinese beer mug (mu kuang) , which
held almoet almost four quarta, must
have been the horn of the Guar or
oeladang Instead of the rhinoceros as
oreviously claimed, Smithsonian ar
cheologlats report.
Carl W. Bishop, archeologlst of the
Freer Oallery of the Smithsonian,
who recently made a study of an
cient Chinese uses for the rhinoceros,
explains that no horn of any of the
Asian varieties of this animal could
rave contained aeven sheng. as re
ported In early records. The guar and
deladang are the largest of the cattle
family.
The ancient Chinese," Bishop ad'l
ed. "drank enormous quantities of
beer made from rice and millet and
seven eheng may have been only
fair portion for ft veteran drinker."
Although disclaiming the rhino
beer mug theory. Bishop anid the an
cient Chinese tortured political pria
c.ners by wrapping them in the hlile
of a freshly killed rhinoceros. As the
hide dried, he explained, It contracted
slowly and crushed the victim.
