Fond Raining Took 100 Year

On Christmas night, 1643, the Tex
ana attacked the Mexican village of
Mier. Flaher was wounded and the
Texana aurrendered.
They were marched toward Mexico
City, but at Hacienda flalado, 100
miles from flaltlllo, they escaped. Af
ter wandering for days In the moun
tains, they were recaptured by a Mexl'
oan cavalry squad.
One In Ten Executed
Gen. flanta Anna ordered one In
each ten of the prisoners to be shot,
On March 35 they were made to draw
beana from a pitcher held by an of
ficer. It contained 17 black beans and
1M whit onea.
That night the unlucky 17 were
hot as they eat on a log.
The rest of the band with the ex
ception of Capt. Swing Cameron, wno
waa shot at a later date, were taken
to Mexico City and kept at hard lab
for years. Eventually all were given
their liberty.
. Later, during the war with Mexico,
Texas members of Gen. Zach Taylor's
army got an order on the alcalde of
Hacienda flalado to surrender the
mains of the 17 Texani who were
shot there.
They were brought to La Grange,
center of the district from w-ntch
most of the Texana had come. A few
yeara later the remains of the SO kill
d at Salado Creek also were return
ed here.
