She pulled the bed away from the

tbe head, pushed it briskly down tbe
ward.
Behind tba two red acreen the
muttering role went on. Outside,
th aun streamed down.
Neata Rlddell got out of ths ear a
tittle way down the road and atood
for a moment wltb her hand on the
door.
'Now, Tom, you'll wait here, and
It It'a Jimmy, and it they'll let blm
come, TH coma out and tell yon.
And It It lan'tr aald the man at
th wheel.
Ha waa ao Ilka Nesia Rlddell that
strangers took tham for twins. Aa a
matter of tact, ah waa three yeara
tba elder and very much the better
man. Tom Williams did as ha waa
told, and with no mora than some
times a sulky look, and sometimes a
Jerk of the shoulders.
Neata alammed tha door and
walked op the road towarda the
gats. It waa going to ba really bot.
She had been In two mlnda about
wearing her new blue voile, but In
th end ah had chanced It. For all
she knew. It might be the last oppor
tunity sha would have, because If
thla man who had been picked up In
tba fog wasn't Jimmy, then It waa a
hundred to one that Jimmy waa
drowned; and If Jimmy waa drown
ed, aha would have to go Into black.
8b lifted th latch of tha gate,
pushing It open with a brisk Jerky
movement, and walked np tha gravel
path. Tba garden waa bright with
autumn flowers. Big heads of pink,
and white, and purple phlox aunnad
themselves, but tha cornflowers and
Shirley poppies had been beaten
down by the heavy raln'and sprawl
ed untidily on tba drenched earth.
Mrs. Rlddell did not look at the
flowers. Bbe walked atralght up to
the front door, rang tha bell, and
then waited, with her banda clasped
ratber tightly upon the red handbag
which matched her beret. Bbe waa
ratber a handsome young woman,
with a high color and dark hair that
curled naturally.
Her grey eyea were little too
small and a little too closely set, and
there were lines between tbem, and
other line about her mouth which
might apell temper. She wore large
pearl earring and tha latest choker
necklet, also of pearls enormous
white onea. They made her throat
look brown and ratber stringy.
SHE had rung tbe hell, but tba door
atood open. 8b could aea across
tha email lobby and down a long
whlte-walled corridor. Two other
passagea went off to tbe right and
left, and In a moment a fat. rosy,
cheeked girl of eighteen, with a
whit cap and blue print sleeves
rolled up, came flying round tha left-
hand corner,
Nesta Rlddell began at one.
"I've com shout th message on
tha radio."
Tha girl opened blank round ayaa.
Mrs. Rlddella browa met ln
straight Una, a dark Una Ilka a

Th rosy girl became rosier, and
her eyaa rounder. Sha waa desper

She aald. "I'll tell nurse," and bolt

Nesta opened her hsg, took out a
beet of paper, and waited, when
the nurse cam, she would know
