MURDER 8QUAD
DDT then, looner or later, Colin
muted, hli Ufa was forfeit any
way unless be could uncover the
Mask's Identity and force ont Into
the open thla llttle-less-than fiend,
who more and more continued, It ap
peared, to grow and acquire the stat
ure of what might well be the moat
ruthleee, versatile, and powerful
criminal of Us time.
The stakes were heavy. Thoughts
of Qormalne came to him. He was
flzbtlng not only for bis own life
but for Germaines happiness as
well. His all was on the table. He
shrugged his shoulders fatalistical
ly. There was no turning back now.
K was the toss of a coin.
But he bad come a long way on
the road. Helmie Schwann and
Buck O'Mara, It was certain, were
both at times in direct contact with
the Mask and he, Colin, was now
In Buck O'Msra's mob, Helmie
, Schwann was remote; It was Buck
O'Mara's confidence that be bad to
win, and Buck O'Mara that be had
to watch. That was why be was
here.
He smiled without mirth. Misgiv
ings and fears were the human lot
and came unbidden, but why sub
ject himself to this mental tor
ment? It was useless, purposeless
even It It was human to do so. He
bad chosen bis course deliberately,
there had seemed to be no other
way, and, whatever happened to
night, he must perforce go through
with It to the end.
He drove bis mind afield. More
bad been said about Laxarre and
the "members" of the club who had
taken flight on tha night of Dol
Ire's attack. Tbey were still In
biding, still under cover, and New
.York knew them notl The Identi
fication ot Kennlston, their roue
millionaire leader, had been awk
ward Kennlston's lite was still
being subjected to a searching In
vestigation, as were the lives of all
those who, so far as the police could
discover, bad ever been associated
with blm.
And since the uttering ot coun
terfeit money was a matter that au
tomatically Involved the federal au
thorities, the Secret Service was In
the forefront of the picture. La
arre's name bad not actually been
mentioned, but through Inference, a
reference to the man who had got
S "hide full of lead," It was appar
i sot that Latarre bad entirely re
covered, and like the others, was
still In biding.
Colin smiled Queerly. 80, after all,
be had saved Laiarre's life. He
was glad In a purely humanitarian
sense that bis efforts bad not been
In vain; but In a matorlal sense It
mattered little now whether La
sarre was dead or alive. Instead ot
Lasarre there was now Buck
O'Mara,
PROBABLY from the start, La
sarre, even It Lasarre had been
willing, could have helped but little.
He rated Laiarre as being perhaps
ot the same status and on the same
plane amongst the Musk's tools as
Benny Malone quite a dlltorent
status from that of Buck O'Mara or
Helmie Schwann.
And yet Reddy's letter, though
still undelivered, had proved to he
by a strange twist ot fate the "open
sesame" to the Mask's operating
headquarters at the Wine Press,
and to whatever measure ot Buck
O'Mara's confidence he already pos
sessed. If It had not been tor that
letter he would never have gone to
Cap a l'Orage; It he had not gone
to Cap a l'Orage be would never
bave heard ot Dollalre.'
And, If be had never heard ot Dol
lalre, he would not bave gone to
Splnelll's last night; and The
trail led on. blazed by that letter, to
where he stood at this moment, an
Initiate Into one of the Mask's mobs.
Nevertheless, though It had now
outlived Its usefuneas so far as he
was concerned, he wondered, as he
aways had, what was In that letter.
Some day perhaps he would meet
Lasarre again and deliver the letter
and perhaps not. And perhaps La
sarre would explain the nature ot
his liaison with Reddy and per
haps not. It mattered little now, La

sarre was no longer needed, and
could no longer be of any help.
Again bis mental scene shifted.
Buck O'Mara and Benny Malone
had talked about Splnelll. Splnelll
was on the payroll, too. Detective
Sergeant Mulvey might prove to be
altogether too curious as to tha way
In which Harry the Lynx had left
the night club whose obvious exits
might well have been closely guard
edto say nothing of the fact that
the lights bad so fortuitously gone
out almost Instantly at tbe sound ot

casually, dismissed casually. A pos
sibility, that was all. No 8 0 S had
oome from Splnelll, to everything
waa apparently lake to far. Why
worry about ltt Splnelll would be
given "protection" It necessary, Co
lin cupped his hands over a match
and lighted a cigarette. A side Issue
that concerned him little no bear
ing on the main Issue.
He stepped out from behind the
wheelhouse and moved over to the
boat's rail. Someone was leaving
the wheelhouse. Benny Malone.
Buck O'Mara was still In there with
Smudge KUrea at the wheel
"Oh, hello, darkle!" said Benny
Malone at he stepped over to Co
lln's side. "I waa Just going to bunt
you up. Suck wants a couple of ue
to go aboard with him and have a
little social visit with Dollalre be
fore the boys get busy get the
Idea? eo's Dollalre won't turn hit
toes up without knowing what lt't
all about That wonld be Just too
badl I said I'd pick you to help play
the hand, seeing that yon didn't
miss any tricks last night, and Buck
said that was okay by blm."
"Sure!" agreed Colin enthusias
tically. '
"You Just look Innocent," cau
tioned Benny Malone, "until Buck
gives us the high sign to flash our
rods. Dollalre't schooner ain't
showing any lights, but Smudge has
Just picked her up out there. We'll
be alongside In a few minutes. You
Just bang around here, and then
trail along with Buck and me. Un
derstand?" "Sure!" said Colin enthusiasti
cally again. "Thanks a lot, Benny,
for a ringside seat"
OUT ot tht darkness Benny Ma
lone't features grinned In
friendly fashion.
It was coming to you, darkle,"
he said. "You made good. Now I
got to check up with the boys down
In the cabin and hear 'em recite
their lessons the way Buck doped
It out tor them. I won't be long."
He moved away heading aft at
a halt-run.
Colin fallowed hard. Bad at It
had looked before this was worse.
Dollalre' s executioner 1 Or co-execu-tloner
with Benny Malonel
He stared out Into the blackness
ahead. Something out there was
taking thape. He felt the boat't
speed slacken, the vibration cease
as tbe engine was shut off. A hall
came across the water. Buck O'Ma
ra stepped out ot the wheebouse
and answered It using his bands at
a megaphone.
"That you, Dollalre!" he bawled.
"This Is Helmie Schwarm's outfit"
"Sure It's me, by crlpee!" the
voice answered. "Come alongside.
The Good Lord could not have given
ns a better night eh?"
Attaboy!" Buck O'Mara called
back heartily.
The boats maneuvered bumped
against the schooner's hull and
were made fast Colin brushed his
hand across his eyes. His mental
processes burned his vision. It was
all strangely Indistinct and yet It
was all horribly real.
He found himself mounting a
short rope ladder on tbe beels of
Buck O'Mara and Benny Malone.
There were no lights showing any
where; but his eyes grown accus
tomed to the darkness, he could see,
as be reached the deck, a doien or
more forms leaning over the sohoon-
er's rail while a chatter ot voices.
as bantered greetings were ex
changed between the crew on the
deck and the boats below, resound
ed discordantly In his ears.
Boats always seemed to take him
to slaughter, Colin thought with a
grimace at he carefully placed hit
feet on the rounds ot the swinging
ladder. There had been the night
when Qermalne's boat had taken
him to tht "club" on tbe St Law
rence, and when he had had to see
men shot down while be was help
lessly tied to a tree.
Then the slaughterers were Dol
lalre't men. Tonight In a boat be
longing to the man who had threat
ened blm with death, Colin wat to
tee Dollalre't men shot to bits Id
equally cruel fashion.
