window to the porch roof of the home
of bis nephew, Wtnthrop Parkhurst,
with whom be lived here. He wu
taken to Atlantic City hospital, where
be died at 4 t m.
A terrific attack he launched from
the pulpit of hi . Madison Square
Presbyterian church in 1892 against
what be termed a "damnable pack
of administrative bloodhounds" start
ed a campaign which resulted In the
unseating of Tammany In New Tork.
On a wave of reform, William L.
Strong was elected mayor and Theo
dore Roosevelt waa installed as police
commissioner. Tammany came back
after the Strong admlnlstratoln to
put Robert A. VanWyck in the may
or's chair, but later, with parkhurst
playing a prominent part, a fusion
movement again beat Tammany and
elected Setb Low aa mayor. 1
Although he retired In 1918, Dr.
Parkhurst never changed his opinion
of what he called political "corrup
tion, and occasionally he issued a
blast against it from his New Jersey
borne.

EAST PITTSBURGH. (UP) T h e
"flying boat' has come through Its
first practical test with "flying col
ors." according to Dr. Oscar Tiotjens,
noted for bis research In stream
lining of airplanes, racing automo
miles, Zeppelins and railway cars.
A 14-foot boat with normal maxi
mum speed of about 13 miles an
hour waa used in the teat. When
converted to & "flying boat," by. at
tachment of hydrofoils, or wlng-llke
planes, the craft attained a speed of
about 24 miles an hour on the Dela
ware river at Easing ton, Pa.
"The hydrofoils act In water as
an airfoil acts m air,' Dr. Tistjens
said. "When a certain speed is
reached the airfoil, or wln edge,
lifts an airplane off the ground Into
the air. Similarly, my hydrofoil lilt
the boat clear of the water."

ROME, K. Y. (UP) The use of
gas nas a psychological effect upon
a soldier, according to Dr. R. A. Wll
kins, research engineer for the Re
vere Copper and Brass corporation,
because it is an enemy with which it
la difficult to cope.
During the world war. ' Wilkin
said. Aiverlcan gas was 1.6 per cent
more effective than that produced
by the enemy, and he spoke of a
new and more deadly product that
waa In 4he course of manufacture
when the armistice was signed.
ESCAPE DEATH IN
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Mcpherson of
302 south Orange, who were reported
critically 111 early yesterday from
poisoning, were in an improved con
dition last night and the attending
physician stated their recovery was
expected.
The McPhensons, who spent the
holiday week-end at Brookings, ac
cording to the report, ate mussels
gathered there, which caused the se
vere poisoning. Their little daughter
failed to eat any of the seafood and
was not stricken with the acute Ill
new upon return to Medford.
Wednenday night Mr. McPherson's
condition was described as very seri
ous and Mrs. Mcpherson was also In
a critical state. She showed a mark
ed Improvement early yesterday and
Mr. McPherson was showing signs of
recovery last ntght.

KILLED IN CRASH
CORVALLIS. Ore, Sept. 8 (API
His plane crashing Into the ground
Just efter leaving the North Cor
vallla airport. Ray Blcknell, 38, gar
age mechanic, waa killed here" late
yesterday afternoon. Blcknell waa
takln? oft and banked Into a turn
befora gaining sufficient altitude,
when his plane noted Into the ground
and was totally demolished.
His body wsa found on one of the
Kings, with his skull fractured, face
burnt,! by hot oil and clothes bear
ing indications of being burned In
the crash, Viough the plane did not
catch lire.
Blcknell had bees flying about
three years snd la survived by his
mother, sister and a brother, living
tn Busene. and by two children, who
reside with his estranged wife In
Toronto, Canada,

Richard Weare. who spent his early
days in an ingenious home-made In
cubator, weighs a normal 35 pounds
today.
Richard was born prematurely. He
weighed only three and one-half
pounds and was "to small even to
cry.
His father, J. H. Weare. placed a
wide board across the lnfant'a crib
and connected four 40-watt lamps
The heat from the lamps provided an
even temperature of 100 decrees.
Richard, meantime, was fed through
an eye-dropper.
As the infant gained weight, the
temperature was gradually reduced
by turning out tbe lights, one at a
time. After two and one-half months
the child was taken from the lncu-'
bator tn normal condition.

ployed by American -operated airlines
on July 1. 1S33, than on the same
date lu 1833, according to the aero
nautics branch of the department of
commerce. The 1933 total waa 6897
employe a.
Of this number, 875 were pilots
and 103 co-pi lots, while 3336 wore
mechanics. 1613 other hangar and
field personnel and 1381 office em
ployes. Gasoline consumed by scheduled
airlines during the first half of 1633
totaled 13,589,547 gallons, the de
partment noted, a substantial in
crease over the 1933 figures. OH
consumed by these planea also show
ed an Increase, pumping from 317,
656 gallons for the fln-t six months
of 193 to 470,184 gallons for the 1933
period.
All of these Increases wars made
in spite of the fact that at tf end
of the period this year there were
only 544 planes in operation as com
pared with 580 on July 1, IS 33.
