U. 8. A.:
In recent years the English speak
ing race. Indeed western civilisation,
has been stirred to Its dcpihs by Mary
Bsker Eddy In her discovery and
presentation of Christian Science. To
countless thousands this Science .has
become their avowed religion and has
cast their Uvea into a larger and fin
er mold.
Other countless thousands never
have read Mrs. Eddy's great book
"Selene and Health with Key to the
Sorlpturea." Possibly tltey never have
spoken the words "Christian Science."
Yet ti:ey have, not escaped Its heal
ing touch because Its beneficent In
fluence now has been at work in the
world over half a century, and in
directly. If not directly, has reached
multitudes who have not known It
name.
In on place In her writings (Sci
ence and Health, page 465) Mrs. Edy
dy define Ood aa "Infinite Mind,
Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth,
Lore." And In another (Retrospec
tion and Introspection, page 60) she
writes: "Life la a term used to In
dicate Deity; and every olher name
for the Supreme Being, If properly
employed, ihaa the algnlflcatlon ot
Life."
From thla point of vantage It la
easy to see how Ood can be every
where and All-ln-all, for obvlouslyy
Life, Mind, Principle are everywhere
pervading and all-prevalllng. No
place or purpose, then, remains
for man but to abide In Life
and reflect. Life. Paul, apeaktng
on this Issue with his usual
Intensity, declares that m Qod "we
live, and move, and have our being:"
and that Ood la "above all, and
through all, and In you all," It Is
perfectly accurate, therefore, to de
fine man as the expression or mani
festation of Life Life without be
ginning or danger or disease or end.
To contemplate thla scientific truth
Is to look Into the perfect law of lib.
erty, Is to understand and apply the
dlvln law which set man free from
the aupposltlonai lawa ot sickness
and decrepitude.
Disease Extinguished
The recognition ot this true status
of Ood and man la the basis at
Christian Science practice. Treatment
or prayer In Science. In the case of
sickness, consist largely In realizing,
aa clearly a one may, the unity -of
man with Life harmonious and irre
pressible, and the consequent Im
possibility, save in belief or appear
ance, of Inaction. Inflammation, or
Infirmity of any kind.
Eternal Life, of which the Scrip
tures aver man la the Image and like
ness, really cannot be In pain or
Jeopardy, Life knows no opposition
and biook no interference, but, un
fettered and uucontamluated, Is In
operation throughout mans being.
even where disease may seem to hold
sway. Having one'a spiritual self In
thought a the "temple." what more
reverent, more rational, more potent
prayer can one utter than to declare:
"Th Lord la In hi holy temple, let
all the earl1) (error, evil, disease)
keep sllenc before him?"
Did not Christ Jesus have thla law,
thl truth, In thought when he an
nounced. "I and my Father are one"?
"Where'er he went affliction fled,
and this oftentimes wIMout and di
rect effort on nts part, apparently.
People who came Into hla presence,
listening to his speech or touching
him in the throng, took on new hope
and strength. They forgot their hun
ger, their bodily Infirmities, their
anguish of remorse. Ears were un
stopped and eyea were opened.
There are those, It la true, who are
tkeptltal about th New Testament
biographies of Jesus, and sincerely
so. Yet how has any one the right
to question the acta ascribed to Jesus
until he himself has reached the
stature of sinless manhood? Who
can say what potentialities resld In
perfect man?
Present Perfection
A men and nations accept the
teachings of Christian Science, the
human mind begiiy to part with It
limitation. Then individuals begin
to racognlee the universe more nearly
a It la and to envlssge the health,
abundance, and opportunity which
are the legitimate birthright of man.
Thereby does mankind get glimpse
of that ultimate perfection which
characterizes reality; for it would be
bold man who would argue that
Ood'f creation falls short of perfec
tlftn.
Biology believes that man began a
low, simple form of life. In an In
concelvubly remot past, and through
out tho agea has been tolling upward
toward perfection attainable, If at
all, In a future atlll dim and distant.
Theology teaches that man began
perfect, only thereafter to fall
through disobedience; and that now
his nilrf concern Is to recspture that
perfeotlon.
Christian science Insists that splrl
tual man, tru selfhood, was never
las than perfect, never . less than
eternal Life expressed; and that per
fection la man'a real atatus now. Sci
entifically speaking, therefore, man
1 not working toward perfection;
rather 1 h working from perfection,
For perfection 1 not atatlc. no
mora than are Life and mind, which
undeniably are In constant and per
petual operation. Jeau sums th! up
emphatically when h. declares, "My
Father worketh hitherto, and ' I
work." A state of rest or completion,
without further work or continued
capacity for unfoldment or higher
height to climb, would b intoler
bbl. To paraphrase Tennyson" tlr
rlng Una
Man desire no Isle of th blest,
bo quiet seats of th Just,
To rest In a golden grow, or to
bask In a aummer sky:
Give htm the wage of going on, .
and not to die.
Spiritual Awareness
The practical man 1 Inclined to
scout spiritual things aa visionary
and shadowy, and to put hla trust la
material things, for they, he argues,
sre t tnglble and knowable. Yet how
are they, how Is anything, tanglbl
and knowable, to him or to anybody,
except through consciousness. Con
scloiuness tells th most confirmed
materialiat all he thinks he knows
even about matter.
It Is to human consciousness that
iron is hard, the world round, tho
daffodil yellow, the lark melodious,
the body heavy, th heart glad. th.
man merciful. Without consciousness
there would be no form, no color, no
sound, no rapture, no life, no world,
no man.
Man. far from being the physical
corporeality be appears, really la an
Indlvloual spiritual consciousness.
But consciousness seems not wholly
spiritual not wholly good, but a
blending ot the spiritual and mater
ial, of good and evil; and man ap
pear to vacillate betwetn righteous
ness and sin, health and sickness, life
and death. So that consciousness.
mysterious In substance and awlft la
action, may on moment sound th
depths ot Adam and In another as
cend the heights of Christ.
Yet actually there can be no blend
ing of materia, and spiritual ele
ments. Whatever In man or In con
sciousness seems material or mortal
is seeming or phenomenal only, not
actual. That consciousness which tes
tifies of matter' and mortality 1
false and fleeting; and however in
tlmateiy it may appear to be asso
ciated with genuine consciousness
the two really never touch or blend.
Consciousness Continuous .
Life and Mind have always found
expreM'on, and always will find ex
pression; and that expression Is spiri
tual man, individual spiritual con-
sclousnpis. Hence man coexists with
Ood, without beginning of days or
end of years. Not In th beginning
of ages but In dlvln Prlncipl. ha
Ood cieated man. Therefore, were
the mist of material existence lifted,
it would be seen that birth and death
an alike unknown to man. In thl
unassailable truth He th remedy
for fear.
Material consciousness fnay laps
at times, aa when an anaesthetic 1
administered or accldont or sickness
overtakes th Individual. It may
weaken or fad with advancing year
and eventually com to an end. If
one' observation extends no further
than these passing phenomena, on.
may conclude that man la mortal and
that Individual existence end with
the grave.
And yet, were the entire structure
of material consciousness dissolved,
there would remain th aubllm
struoture of spiritual consciousness.
whicn, like Mind, la from everlasting
to evorlastlng. Spiritual conscious
ness precedes birth a certainly as It
Persia's after death. Repeatedly doea
Jesus refer to pre-exlstence a well
aa to future existence. "Father," h
prayed, "glorify thou m with thin
own aelf with the glory which 1 had
with thee before the world wa."
Also, "I came forth from the Father,
and am come Into the world; again,
leave the world, and go to th
Father."
Not By Bread Alone
Poverty In the presence of plenty
a strange paradox truly. Now that
Ingenuity has brought forth machin
ery wnloh all but abolishes' physical
labor, mankind Is bewildered and
knows not what to do with It leis
ure. Still mesmerised by th. bygon.
curs, that man must earn hla bread
by ths sweat of his brow, people look
about for a ditch tto dig or column
to add; and they would make war on
th. machine that have despoiled
them of their drudgery. So th. world
today, which might b a place of
peace and abundance, with cultural
and spiritual development a man'
chief occupation, has, to appearances,
become a place or alarm and want.
And the end I not yet, for the mir
acle of production la hardly mor
than well under way. It can fill th.
world with comforts and luxuries as
the v.aters cover the sea.
Have we not In all this a .hint ot
th. coming ot man' dominion? Th
intelligence which almost miracu
lously ha speeded up Invention and
released men from toll, can ws not
trust It to lead him Into higher and
richer fields of endeavor where work
1 unlabored and gloriously produc
tive? Labor, In Its old sense, Is near
lng Its end, let us hope; but on th
other hand let ua not overlook th.
fact that man as God's representa
tive cannot be otherwise then active,
and that work and business, mor.
and better than have yet been
known, are at hand for those who
have the vision to see.
And men have thla vision Just o
far a they let that Mind be In them
which waa In Christ Jesus. That
Mind hold th solution for th.
world perplexities; It hss a way ot
escape. Leaning lea upon our own
understanding and gratefully turn
ing to divine Mind for direction, w
may confidently expect to find that
way ana that solution.
Th fact U that after ages ot wan
dering In materialism we are nearlng
th promised land. Th Hebrew,
when they reached th. border ot
Canaan after centuries of privation,
were dismayed becatise of rumors of
giant foea and fortified cities ahead.
They therefore turned back Into th.
wilderness, where they wandered
forty years. Then, more oourageou
counsels prevailing, they marched on
to possess the territory which had
been sworn them. There may be tem
porary confusion with us today, but
when w mov. forward with Him
"whoso presence bright all spae. doth
occupy, all motion guide," depression
will collapse as fell th olden wall
of Jericho.
