Actlcities of
Legion Auxiliary
By Mrs. Cole Holmes
The Nebraska Legionnaire publish
ed a very good article that I am
quoting as follows;
"As time passes1. It Is becoming
more and more evident that there Is
a silver lining to the cloud that took
the form of the federal cuts in pay
ment to the disabled veterans, Prior
to the passage of the so-called Econ
omy bill, there Is no doubt but that
the sentiment of the American peo
ple was swinging away from the
World war veterans, due to the fact
that many payment were being
made to them which It was felt were
not Justified.
This fact was recognized by the
vetersns themselves, especially the
representative ' group composing the
American Legion. A move was on
foot to get rid of the "gold brlcker"
In thla proposition of compensation
and the like, and the legion had
ready to present to the present spe
cial session of congress a program of
payment which would have been
just to the government and to the
deserving veteran.
The legion's program waa disre
garded, and In a wave of hysteria
congress unloaded onto the president
the duty of drawing up a program
of reduction In federal payment to
war veterans. The men whom the
president trusted to formulate this
program made the mistake of going
too far, betraying the men with the
service -connocted disabilities. . No
body hnd asked that the war dis
abled he 'deprived of the payments
that are their "just due. Yet the reg
ulations put out to enforce the new
Economy act crucified these men.
The American public Is fair-minded.
The evident injustices being
done to World war veterans under
the provisions of the new act didn't
set well with the rank and file of
American citizens. Each one of them
la willing to acknowledge that the
nation owes a debt to the man who
was disabled In Its defense. So when
the American Legion began to fight
back on behalf of the disabled, pub
lic sentiment quickly formed to say
that the legion Is right. That la tho
bright side to the cloud, for nothing
could have happened to swing public
sentiment back to the veteran more
quickly than the mistake of putting
the disabled on the cross."
The national legislative committees
of the Legion and Auxiliary are
keeping an eye on the legislation
dealing with the veteran and altho
the legislation la favorable at present
yet It la not as liberal as could be
wished for in regard to cases where
the veteran Is deceased and it is a
question of pension for widow or
orphan. In somo cases the disabled
veteran himself la not able to pro
duce the necessary records aa In the
case of shell shock victims or those
in the Insane wards. These men
must be taken care of and as they
were disabled In the defense of the
government then the nation should
continue to maintain- hospitals for
sxich cases.

There is no place in a bank's function to furnish the
capital for enterprise. That la a matter for private
investors who thus become partners in a project.
After the enterprise has been organized and has
proved its successful operation then the bank can
assist with short term loans to meet seasonal re
quirements. .
Thus, while the bank can greatly assist the carrying
on of enterprise be it individual or corporate, it
cannot act as financial backer.
