A certain American 'shipping line
seems to be on the verge of getting
itself all tied up with the govern
ment.
Some time back the head ot this
line negotiated successfully with
Washington for the acquisition of
some of the U. 8. lines, but as tbe
months went by no money wae forth
coming in payment therefor.
Federal agents were sent out to look
over the line's book.
The book were somewhat tumbled;
up, according to preliminary report.
But It was ascertained that the
line' head had been awarded a com
mission for negotiating the U. 8. line
deal. This was being paid In regular
Installments, while Uncle Bam went
begging for his dough. Further the
boo its revealed that the line bad an
attorney at 950,000 a year. Three years
ago this attorney waa loaned 9100,000
on which neither Interest nor princi
pal has ever been paid.
Orders went out to discontinue fur
ther payments to either man until
the government claim was cleared up.
The aluminum trust Is back 4s
town trying to get an NRA code with
the Independents snapping at it
heels.
There are three phases of this busi
ness. First, production of aluminum
up to the Ingot stage; second, semi-
fabricating, and third, manufacture
ot kitchen utensils and all the other
things this metal goes Into.
The trust controls the first phase
100 per cent; the second, 75 per cent,
and evon manages to wangle 60 per
cent ot the profits from finished pro
duct. Because the latter come in
competition with thing made from
other metals, they go Into a separate
cods. 1
Flv Independent mill are engaged
In semi-fabricating. Thl group 1 try
