START FOR FIRE; FINISH IN WATER By D. N. Hoylman. ,It' Just about a half hour aftr aupper In 1746 Co., Selma. Oregon. and tbe members of tlie camp are scrambling around, making 'up bunks, folding work clothes, and policing up In general. A camp visitor won ders at all the haste. He looks at the bulletin board and seea: "Special policing of camp to be followed by swimming party Everygody goes." He's just finished the last line when the clanging notes of the fire gong breaks in upon him. Immediately, he's almost swarmed under as the men pour out of their tents and line up In the streets. Leaders appear as If by magic and shout their orders to their already detailed crews. They separate, some to the bucket brigade. some to the back-pump crews, and the rest tear Into the supply tent and start bringing out fire fighting equipment. The fire truck Is backed up beside the tent and men, sweating and dusty. are streaming In and out llke ants, loading picks, shovels, axes, saws, and the various equipment that serves to suppress fires. Between tugging and pulling at heavily loaded boxes of fire fighting tools, snatches of con versation can be heard: "I guess there'll be no swtmmln' tonight for us. Just our luck to have this fire break out when we were goln' for a swell awlm, but we'll get this baby out Just like we got those other two." The truck la Just about full now the men are piling on up on the end and high over the aide they go scrambling madly. Bruised knuckles and crunching heels are Ignored in the mad melee. Amid shouts of "Step on "er" "Hold 'er" (there are still a few Illustrious fire fighters trying to pile on) the truck darts out onto the road, siren screaming madly, they're off In a cloud of dust. They whin down the highway, eager eyes scanning the horizon for the tell-tale signs of smoke none yet. They turn off a side road must be up In them mountains Suddenly the "truck.ee" puts on the brakes and rolls up beside the dam on Rough and Ready Creek. Two most enjoyable and successful young people's summer conference have been held this Tear In the Pres bytery of southwest Oregon, with an enrollment respectively of about 100 snd 70. The former was held late In June at Rogue River, and the latter early tn August at Bandon. The Bandon conference la the first ever held In thla part of the Preaby tery, and was so successful and so enthusiastically received that plM are already in hand for another next year at the aame place. The conference at Bandon this year was due largely to the lnltla tlve and perseverance of the local pas tor. Rev. Donald J. Henry, and the loyal support of his people and others near by. Conference sessions were held mostly In the Bandon church with some classes across the street in the Episcopal church building. Afternoons were given, aa usual, to recreation, games, stunts, etc., in cluding swimming (in an enclosed, heated and specially chartered pool of sea water.) Miss Mary Moore, of the Presbyte rian foreign board staff In New York and whose home is In Bandon, was dean of the conference with Miss Donaldlna Cameron of San Pranclsco as guest speaker. Dr. D. A. Thomp son, synodlcal executive of Portland, had charge of the vesper services, and Ralph T. Moore, a business man of Bandon and a brother of Miss Mary Moore, was recreation leader. Others on the faculty were Lyman Carrier. Southern Methodist layman of Co qullle. Oregon, and Glenn R. Cole of Westminster seminary, Philadelphia, who la student aupply-pastor this summer in the North Bend Presbyte rian church. As to the expenses of these confer ences, "Southwest Oregon" challenge the entire church! At Bandon the whole charge for registration, room, hoard, etc., waa only gl.85 for three daysl At Rogue River, for seven days, it was 94.60. And thla Includes fine, appetising, bountiful meals, aa your correspondent can personally teatifyl Possible only through many donations of food and supplies, and much vol unteer help. The dean of the Rogue River con ference was Dr, John W. Haman, paa tor at Ornnta Pass, with Mrs. Haman as dean of women, and Rev. W. J. Howell of Medford aa dean of men Drs. D. A. Thompson and W, U Van Nuys of Portland and several minis- ters of the Presbytery were included In the Grants Pass faculty, with Rev. H. T. Mltchelraore of Ashland as reg istrar and manager. The conference next year, which haa been held this year and tor seve ral years previously at Rogue River, will be at our new permanent confer ence grounds at Glendale. Thla haa been made possible by the gift to tne Presbytery of hla ranch of 160 aeffa by Rev. John K. Howard, pastor at Glendale, Oregon, reserving only the life use of the house aa a residence. Tills site, bearing the name of "Fir Point," is ideally located, lying be tween the Southern Pacific railroad and the Pacific highway, hardly three mile from either, and surrounded by magnificent mountain and valley scenery, such as makes southwest Oregon famous. There la an ample supply of fine mountain spring water, a young orchard, and other improve ments on the place; and plans are al ready under way for the erection, largely by gifts of labor and material, of a kitchen, dining room, and girls' dormitory for use next year.
