It certainly Is a true saying that
God alone knows where Don and Dick
will be on the morrow. We thought
that by this time we would be back
In New York for a certainty, but here
are In Montreal, with a good
chance of etaylng here In Montreal
at least for another month. You see.
we sail from here for England on a
cattle boat In a few weeka. That la
more of prospect than we had In
the but city, so here we stay.
Last Monday we left- Nomlnlngue.
saying goodbye to the Greer family.
with whom we had been staying, and
promising to look them up In the
next 15 or 30 years If we happened to
be In Canada. Mr. Greer came down
from Nomlnlngue with us, and on the
morning we were to leave, he remem
bered a friend of his In the cattle
shipping business, and that that It
would not be amiss to look him up on
the long shot that he might be able
to do something for us. He did. We
went to this friend's office, and were
promised a sailing the next week until
he learned that we were Americans,
and not English subjects. Then It
was all off. But he told us the name
of another shipper, who waa not o
fastidious about nationality, and this
man proved to be our oyster.
. He told us that last week we had
scoured the city for men to go with
a Bhipment of Kansas mules to
Genoa, Italy, and could find none, al
though the pay was good. And here
were we. not over a- few hours' drive
away, pining for Just such an oppor
utnlty. Cattle boats have long been
the accepted meana of access to Eu
rope for vagabonds, but the truth le
there are practically none now leav
ing the United States. There 1, for
one thing, a 30 per cent duty on
American beef, end so American cattl
are brought into Canada, and ahlpped
from Montreal or Quebec.
We would rather ahlp from Mon
treal, anyway. I have been out ot
New York once, and the trip 1 not
so exciting. After leaving the grand
view of the Manhattan skyline and
harbor.' and thence out through the
narrows that separate Long Island
and Staten Island, the only thing to
see Is a rapidly receding shore line.
and then nothing but the open sea.
This way, after leaving Montreal we
will have the whole delightful trip
out the St. Lawrence, with a grand
view of Quebec, and through the moat
Interesting and quaint part of Can
ada. ' '
When we flrat went through Mon
treal we didn't think much ot It. We
round out, to our surprise, that It
wa built on an Island, and that we
would have to pay a toll to get off, a
we had to get on. that It had about
a million Inhabitants; that the old
section of the town 1 very French
and not too clean, and the street
there are narrow and twisting, and
that was about all.
Since we've been back we've seen
a little more of it. The town la liter
ally swamped with colleges. McOlll 1
tile largest and best known, but there
seem to be hundreds of other. The
first day we were driving about the
town with Mr. and Mrs. Greer we
passed nine, and we didn't go very
far, either: That day we went out to

Brother Andre' shrine. It 1 some

shrine at Quebec, where thousand of
invallda are cured every year. The
place Itself Is on the slopes of Mount
Floyal, and from Jhe top one can look
down on a long aweep of beautifully
landsraped and terraced park. The
old, original ahrlne, where Brother
Andre first healed th sick, still
stands, but Is dwarfed by the impos
ing new one.
A long flight of wide marbl stair
leada up the mountain aide, and the
faithful may be seen at any time of
the day climbing them on their knee.
The sight Is an Imposing one. Inside
the shrine 1 a buge ptl of dlacarded
crutches, leg braces, specially dealgned
shoes for the crippled, snd cane. And
many of the crutche and thing bear
testlnionlsls, and especially prayer of
thanks for the cures that have been
affected.
Don and I were allowed to Interview
Brother Andre. He la a very old man,
and we could hardly hear him speak.
but he gave us his blessing for our
trip and promised to pray for u.
From there w drove to the other
end of the Island, to visit the Chapelle
de la Reparation (you ought to bear
that pronounced in French. I can
pronounce It now, but it took me
all week to learn.) This place I one
where a colony of monks hava estan
llshed their headquarters, and where
they have the Way of the Cross laid
out on a trail through the woods. The
stations are made every day, and the
procession la alwaya awelled by people
from town.
We also, that flrat day, visited the
Montreal cemetery. That la a rather
peculiar place to go, but It really was
worth while. One of the peculiar
things about It Is the huge vault
where the bodies are kept during the
winter months. That may not sur
prise you. but It did me. The winters
sre so severe here that it 1 impos
sible to dig grave In the frozen
ground. So the 'people, unfortunate
enough to die at that time an stored
in the vault until th warm weather
arrives. Then the family of th de
ceased Is notified, and whether they
show up or not for the funeral, the
body la burled. All the little towna
between here and Nomlnlngue have
their little vault.

and get him, return to Nomlnlngue
for the week end, and then return to
Montreal for another week. After
that we will probably hav decided
to stay her th rest ot our lives, and
try to get tanned.

John W. Carter of Ruch, a member
of the CCC telephone crow at Camp
Applegate, was reported In a much
Improved condition at the Sacred
Heart hospital thla afternoon, and
had regained consciousness- from hav
ing been struck in the head yester
day forenoon while cutting a limb
from a tree.
Young Carter was aaa.stlng in
stringing some telephone wires, when
a piece became entangled In a tree,
according to word received at the
CCO headquarters here. Young Carter
proceeded to cut the limb down, and
when the branch broke loose, swung
around and struck him In the back
of the head, knocking htm uncon
scious.
He was rushed to the hospital In
the CCQ ambulance, and regained
consclouaneAS some time last evening.
Carter's parents reside In the Ruch
district.
