buying B,00O,000 ewlne. employing
meat packere to process them, and
distributing the meat to the needy.
In an addresa at the century of
Progress explsltlon. he said that the
program will be ready to go IrHo ef
fect in a few days and that he ex
pect It to boost purchasing power
In the corn belt substantially.
The plan should Increase prices of
swine, possible 119 to SO per cent, he
asserted, and at the same time pro

with swine but with short feed sup
plies due to drouth.
The program calls for purchase of
4.000.000 plga weighing 36 to 100
pounds, at from 8 to 8V4 cent
nound. and . 1,000.000 sows soon to
farrow, weighing a minimum of 276
pounds, a tmarket prices on the day
marketed, plus a bonus of 4. The
purchases are to be complete by
about October 1.
They will be made "by specified
nrocessors" for the department of
agriculture. The meat will be turn
ed over to the federal emergency re
lief administration for distribution.
Wallace estimated the cost of the
program at up to $5,000,000, to be
met by a processing tax on nogs,
which will go Into effect after Sep
tember 30. The tax rate and effec
tive date will be fixed later, he said,
estimating that the levy, paid by
those who turn the swine Into mar
ketable pork, will be "considerably
less than a cent a pound."

Senator Peter Norbeck of South Da
kota was a visitor at Crater Lake this
morning, enjoying a trip around the

the lodge by the Chamber of Com
merce. Senator Norbeck's visit to the lake
was welcomed as of great Importance
to the national park and the south
ern Oregon country, In view of the
various committees upon which he
serves In the senate, Including agri
culture: and forestry, special commit
tee on conservation of wild life re
sources and publlo lands and surveys.
