And Bouchard at the moment waa

"Thousands, I tell you I" Bouchard

Bouchard paused, wet his Upa

"Shut upl" exclaimed Larocque
sharply. "Don't make so much nolae,

Bouchard scrubbed at bla un

"It la that ot which I am going to

Bouchard, with tha rest of It How
did you find this out?"
Colin stirred noiselessly easing
bis musclea. He shared Larocque'a
lnipatlenco. Ha had heard a great
deal but also very little. What were
' those thousands that Bouchard
talked about what waa tha secret
of this power house?
Bouchard's little ratlike ayes were
en the bottlo longingly, but It had
been withdrawn from beyond his
reach.
"It was yesterday morning, before
It was light," ha explained. "I waa
watching. I saw someone go from
tha club to tha power house. It Is
enly a little way maybe thirty, for
ty yards. I followed. Tb power-
back here, and then that fog sot In.
It was not gone until midnight. Then
I went back to tha club, and stayed
there and watched all day. So you
see now, eh, why I was not here this
afternoon?"
"That's all right, now that w un
derstand," Boldua conceded hearti
ly. "Well, did you And out anything
more?"
"No," replied Bouchard with a
throaty chuckle, "except that some
ot them were lost for sura nearly
all night, and that they do not soarch
any mora now. But what I found out
before then I bave not told you yet
I have atolen close to the club at
night, and I bava heard them talk.
You betl Listen! The big boss Is a
man they call the Mask."
"Wa will sea who Is the boss when
wa meet blm!" observed Larocque
grimly.
Bouchard shook his had.
"You will not meot him," he stat
ed with a abort laugh. "Ha h nover
there. Ha Is always In New York.
1 have heard them talk a lot about
him and I do not understand but
they do not seem to know who he la
themselves. That'a funny, eh? but
It la true. And I have heard them
talk a lot about what they call W.
P, that la also In New York, but I
do not understand about that
either."
"New York la a long way off,"
Larocque pointed out derisively.
"What do wa care what It means?
How many men have they got at
the club?"
"Ten," said Douchard laconically.
. "Ho!" ejaculated Larocque face
tiously. ''Then we aro too many I We
ought to hare refused halt of those
brave boya at St. Pierre and Mlque
lon who wanted to Una their pock
ets. Think ot It, Bolduc, when we
coma to divide! W could swallow
the club alive."
But again Bouchard shook hli
head.
