Chapter U
THE TWO VI8ITOR8
pOUN sat up In bad with a (tan,
- consclons at tha same time both
of rolees and that hs had overslept
himself. Ha had flnng hlmsalt down
on tha bed after aupper solely with
tha Idea ol relaxing a little whtl be
fore itrolllng over to ipend an hour
or two with Germalna, and then,
later, to pay a surreptitious visit to
this Anatole Bouchard of whom she
bad spoken.
It was dark now. The voices came
from the next room through Ma
dame Frenier's flimsy partition. Two
men speaking In French.
He knew who they ware. They had
arrived on the Belle Fleur late that
afternoon. Madame Trenler had In
troduced them to him at the hotel
Larocque and Boldus, their names
were. They had coma over from
Gaspe, they said, to catch the Bona
venture, which was due tomorrow,
and were going up the coast to Sev
an Islands. A brawny-looking pair.
They war talking In low tones,
bnt area low tonea in tha Hotel du
Canada were little less than a broad
east throughout the entire establish
ment. "Sac re noml" exclaimed a gruff
voice. 11 tell you, I do not like It It
waa to be tonight If hs discovered
anything at that devilish club, but
all afternoon there baa been no sign
of him. He should have been here.
What do you think, eh?"
Another voice answered Boldue'a
pbvlonsly.
"How do I know what to think I"
returned Boldne irritably, "It Is one
of two things, He has become afraid
aid baa run away with tha money
Sollalre paid him In advance in
which ease Oollalra will silt his
throat for him If he ever finds him
again! or else ba haa been caught
down there at tha club."
Colln's bed was against tba par
tition that separated tha two rooms
-and so, too, now was Colln's ear. It
waa plain the man these two were
talking about was the spy at whom
Laiarre had taken a pot shot yes
terday. But what waa It all about? It was
clear that these men were not police
who were trying to round up the
club. The police did not slit tha
throats of their stool pigeons or,
at least, they weren't supposed tot
"It Is that of which I am afraid
that be has been oaught," Larocque
responded with an oath. "They will
make blm talk. A man talks eh
when they begin to gouge his eyes
outr
"Baal" exclaimed Bolduc What
can ha talk about? He knowa noth
ing excapt that he haa been well
paid to find out what be can."
"Damnation!" swore Larocque.
"But that la enough, isn't it? They
t111 be on their guard."
"tjAHI Bolduo spat out again.
D "And auppose they are? They
will not know what to expect, and
wa will be too many for them, any
way. That was a bad night for them
two weeks ago when Dollalra put In
at the club to sell some of the
whisky we had on board. Two of
tha crowd there were swell erooka
that were pointed out to Dollalra In
a night club the last time he waa in
New York selling a cargo.
"So when he got back on board,
Dollalra lays his linger along bis
nose, and says, 'Vollal They are not
there to fish salmon, those rascals!
And times are poor with us. Even
the fish do not bite In this depres
sion. Let us aea about this Innocent
club and help ourselves.' "
"Jnst because you wars with Dol
lalra that night is no reason why you
should repeat the same story a bun
dred times," complained Larocque
aourly. "What are we going to do
now? Take one mora look to see It
maybe be has come back?"
"But, yes I" Colin could almost see
the assertive shrug of Bolduo's
shoulders. "Dollalra will not have
the schooner off the cape for another
two hours, and In any case he will
wait for us. Run along!"
- Tha door of tha adjoining
opened ana closeu. footsteps
.-limped down the stairs.
Colin stared into tha darkness. He
was thinking fast now. It was clear
enoujh that thia Dollalra waa the
head of a bootlegging outfit of which
this precloas pair were a part. And
what waa obviously in the wind now
waa a sort of bl-jacklng expedition.
He could have looked on with utter
complacency, not to say applause,
bad it not been tor Laiarre.
There would be a fight and It
would not ba a bloodless one. Dol
lalra had evidently coma prepared.
A choice crowd aboard that schoon
er, beyond questlonl It would proba
bly result in a shambles. Well, the
world would not miss the passing of
any one of them, except that there
waa Laiarre.
He could not afford to risk any
thing happening to Laiarre. He must
warn Lazarre. That waa Imperative.
The fog last night had lifted Just
after midnight, and Germalna and
ha had returned to Cap a l'Orage
without further mishap. He had had
the whole day-ln which to talk to
Bouchard, but caution, perhaps an
exaggerated caution, had prompted
him to wait until darkness had set
In.
But ha wished now, In view of
what ha had Just heard, that he had
gone during the day. Ha would have
known now what to do be would
have known whether or not be cared
to trust Bouchard In tha first place;
and, aeoondly, whether or not Bou
chard would ba willing to act aa
guide.
If tha trip overland were feasible.
It had, apart from tha element of
time, one Incalculable advantage
over a boat it oould ba done much
mora secretly.
HE STRUCK the match now and
looked at hie watch. Halt-past
eight Not so badl He had thought
it much later than that It would take
him, say, halt an hour all told to
reach Bouchard's shack and have a
talk with tha man. There waa time
enough. If everything sized up all
right he and Bouchard would be off
at once, and ba would have to make
his peace later with Germalna for
not keeping hla appointment with
her this evening.
If, on tha other hand, Bouchard,
for whatever reason, did not fit Into
the picture, that waa another matter
and another way must be found.
There was always the possibility, of
course, that Bouchard might not
even be at home But one thing at
a time.
He swung himself off the bed,
paused to slip an extra box of cart
ridges into his pocket went down
the stairs, and out into the street
It was inky black. Cap a l'Orage
boasted no street lamps, and there
was as yet no moon. But the lighted
windows of the scattered houses
marked the way. At the end of the
street remembering his walk with
Qermalne, he turned Into what was
no more than a wagon track that led
through a stretch of sparse timber-land.
Hera the going was not so good.
The track waa full of ruts and full
of holes, whleb in turn were filled
with water. He could see practically
nothing at all. The land here was
marshy, and, besides. It had rained
heavily during the past few days, so
that once, verging from the track, be
went In over bis boot tops and
swore heartily.
There was nearly half a mile of
It; but finally, as hs rounded a sharp
turn In tha wagon track, he saw a
light glimmering through an open
window no more than a tew yards
away. ,
There waa no doubt about it be
ing Bouchard's shack,' because no
one else lived out this way; at least
It was the only dwelling, or pretense
to a dwelling, that he bad seen on
his walk with Germalna that day;
and there was no doubt but that
Bouchard was at borne bis tears on
that score were set at rest
And then abruptly ha halted. R
waa a warm, muggy night which
accounted tor tha open window.
Bouchard waa at home undoubtedly,
but Bouchard was not alone. Volcos,
speaking In French, floated out to
him on the night air. He could not
bear what was said from where ha
stood, but his muscles tensed sud
denly, seemingly of their own ac
cord. There was something familiar
about two of those voices.
