Its a Great Country!
IT MIGFIT be called ft clinic in citizenship. And it is running
full blast in Jackson county now. More people in Medford
and Southern Oregon should Bee what is ACTUALLY a "noble
experiment," in operation.
TpiIEY are called C C. C. camps, and they are scattered
throughout the untailored wilderness of this section of the
state. Yesterday the present writer visited two of them,
one far up on Elk Creek, the other at Union Creek, both in the
national forest.
In each camp they have approximately 200 men and boys,
of different ages and types, some of them from this county,
but most of them from the East, Midillewest and South. In
the vicinity of Medford there are probably 1200 of them, and
during the day they are all at work.
An interesting story could be writton on what they are
doing, but we arc more interested, at the. moment, in what is
being done to THEM. In a word they are being made into
useful citizens, which is only another term for good citizens.
.....
IITIIEN one gets the entire picture it is really a most imprcs-
sive spectacle. These men a'nd boys, have all been taken
from families which through no fault of their own, have suf
fered severely from the depression. Most of them come from
largo cities, from modern Babylons of noise and brick and stone,
and have been transported out here, and put to work in the
woods, in an entirely new environment. Scores of them, have
in Southern Oregon, seen a forest, green grass and leaves, for
the first time
They work eight hours a day, although in some eases, a
largo proportion of the eight hours is tuken up in transporta
tion to and from their jobs. The remaining 16 hours arc devot
ed to sleeping, eating, keeping their camps in shape, and whole
some recreation.
TPHEY are given plain but excellent food. Statistics show
that all the C. C. C. boys have gained in weight and im
proved in health. Throughout Southern Oregon the health
record has been nothing short of sensational, and to date there
have boon no serious acoidents of any kind.
This is a great achievement in itself, for the cornerstone
of good citizenship is good health, a sound body, and the ab
sence of physical maladjustments which so quickly result ii
mental maladjustments.
EVEN more important perhaps is the vocational feature of
the training. These "soldiers of conservation and recon
struction," are continually being taught how to do things and
how to do them WELL. . How to swing an axe properly for
example, how to build a road or trail, how to build a house, how
to sharpen tools, how to do this, that and the other thing-
all practical and useful, no matter what business or trade, may
be taken up, when normal economio conditions rotufn,
ONTRAEY to popular report there is no army discipline.
w No military training whatever. The boys are free to leave
f they want to leavo, but none have wanted to, in Southern
Oregon. No guard houses are provided, and no punishments
either. If there arc serious- breaches of discipline. if some
bad actor that is incorrigible springs up he is simply discharg
ed, that's all, and the camp goes on without him. 4
WHAT a wonderful thing this is 1 These men niid boys,
CAflUHltinfl nf thrt xenrar. flfr"rSMmn in xi'nrl.l liinlni'V' .arA
put to work in 'the great outdoors, doing things that are useful
to the districts in which they are placed, but even more useful
to thomsolves.
Under firm but kindly discipline and intelligent direotion,
thoy are rostored to health and strength, instructed in the basic
principles of sanitation and hygiene, given practical manual
training, and instead of having to pay to go to such an out
door school, they aro paid FOR it.
Uncle Snm not only provides them with clothes, shelter and
good wholesome food, he pays each "soldier" a dollar a day,
$25 a month being sent to his family or dependents, the remain
ing $5 being for incidentals. Thus the habit of saving and hclp-
ng others, so important in good citizenship is also inculcated.
TPIIIS is a wonderful time in which to, live a now world is
being constructed right around us. We can think of no
more enlightening experience as to what that Now World
PROMISES to be, than to take a trip to somo of these C. C. C.
camps in Southern Oregon.
It IS a clinic in citizenship. Thousands of men, young and
old, who but for the government, under which they live, might
ave become pathotio derelicts or worse, are being made into
pstanding, healthful, self reliant and self respecting American
ltizcns.
It IS a great country, brethren tho UNITED STATES.

THE DEVIL HIS DIE.
A while sgo this column had a re
clpe for anemia one ounce of Iron
and -ammonium-citrate dissolved In
four ounces of
water, a teaa
poonful of this
to be taken after
food thpee times
a day for two or
three months.
Hundreds o t
readers wrote in
to ask whether
It meant an
ounce of Iron
and an ounce of
ammonium cit
rate or what.
Mauy others took
the article on anemia as a cue to
tell me the history of their sick lives
and to ask whether In my opinion
they should try this new cure. The
net reault of all this was that I broke
out a piece of an expensive inlay
oh, I'm not complaining about the
dentist's Job or his fee, for both were
entirely satisfactory.
What did get under my akin was
the number of reports from people
who tried to get the medicine from
the drug store, ready to take. I had
assumed that anyone who can read
can put an ounce of Iron and am
monium citrate (the hyphens do not
belong in the name) In a bottle and
fill the bottle up with water. It Is
not so Astonishing, however, that lay
men should hesitate to "compound
prescriptions." But I was astonished
at the sheer Ineptitude of so many
druggists who muffed the teat. Borne
of them blurted out that they had
"never heard of" Iron and ammonium
citrate. Others complained that they
couldn't fill the prescription without
knowing how much Iron and how
much ammonium cltrato was ordered.
Still others attempted to make the
customer think there was something
fishy about It, and urged some nos
trum aa a more effective remedy for
whatever ailed the customer.
Finally I had to sarcasticate a bit ;
about It and In that vein answered
one of these complaints here, opining
that the pharmacist who couldn't. fig
ure out whether I meant an ounce of
Iron and an ounce of ammonium cit
rate or half an ounce of each, and
therefore used tincture of Iron chlor
ide Initesd. could probably compound
an excellent cheese sandwich.
And that's a moderate statement of
the truth. A number of pharmacists
have written to tell me so and to
applaud my attitude. On the other
hand a number of other pharmacists
have deplored this sarcasm which
they think degrades the pharmacist's
profession. They remind me that
pharmacists cover up many mistakes
that physicians make, and so It would
seem more chsritable of me to over
look such shortcomings on the part
of pharmacists.
That Is not so easy to laugh off. In
fact it pricks my conscience, for 1
know something of the sorrows of the
drug store man. Even if he doesn't
sell cheese sandwiches, dry goods and
hardware, but devotes his profes
sional or expert attention strictly to
the legitimate field of drugs, chemi
cals, sanitary and sickroom supplies,
there is so much shenanigan to in
trigue and lure away his proper pa
trons; such as bootleg drugs, humbug
nostrums and trick merchandise de
signed to appeal to the uninformed
and the unwary, that the life of the
bona fide pharmacist who endeavors
to run a real drug store Is hard. He's
ss happy as a slave. If not quite so
free.
I haven't much doubt that the bird
whose unfamlllarlty with the pharma
copoeia (legal standard formulary for
all drug stores) Inspired my cheap
crack sbout cheese sandwiches Is ine
of the trick druggists who hae late
ly muscled In on what was once a
straight business.
