To the Editor:
test night t started to writ an
article and finished one page and tore
It up. If you had to write feeling
like I did. you'd want to tear It up.
too. I'm afraid. Tomorrow we leave
for New York to try again to get out
for Europe. After all the hollering
we've done, we'll simply have to get
out, whether the boats want ua or
not. and they don't.
We'v bad a lot of fun here, fish
ing, getting aun-burned, loafing and
g.n.ng u . win . "
hard to imagine, either, aince It rail
most of the time. Mark Twain haa
nothing on us when he said that the
worst winter he ever spent was one
summer on Puget Sound. After the
scorching summers of Medford and
New York, If kind of hard getting
used to this kind. And I for one
dont want to get used to them. The
Ideal summer to me Is the kind they
hav In Medford. where it geta nice
In the aprlng and stays that way till
fall. The summers In New York are
too hot. Not according to the mer
cury, but the humidity Is so high
that ninety seems hotter tnon a
hundred and ten In Medford.
It's been a long time since I've
heard from Medford. We haven't had
any mall since we've been here, and
don't expect any till we get back to
the city. If there hav been any
more riot or murders, I haven't heard
of them. When I left Medford I sup
posed that nearly everyone In the
country must have heard of the lit
tle war being waged In the nogue
valley. But not so. Very few peo
ple around New York act aa tno
they'd ever heard of Oregon, let
alone Medford.
We generally carry a map with
ua to show people where the Jfciclftc
coast Is. The United Air Line maps
all show Medford prominently as one
of the main stops, and that helps
some.
To change the subject abruptly,
one day I was sitting on the beach
with several members of the ' Oreer
family, and we got to talking about
peculiar habit of people. That led up
to the peculiar foods eaten through
out the world, and I remembered that
somewhere I'd heard that In Italy
blood-pudding la devoured with gusto.
Thinking to horrify my audience with
this revolting dish, I let them have
It, In my most disgusted tone of
vole. And I caught a Tartar. They
all eat It around here and think lt'a
great. It really can't be a bad a It
first sounds. It's msde with beef
blood and onions, made Into patties
like hamburger, and fried.
I'm always sticking my foot In It
like thst. Last night I was panning
Indians, trying to blast that old hal
lucination about the tall, straight and
romantic Indian buck. The ones I've
seen hav been Just tlTa opposite.
One of the gentlemen In th crowd
waa a quarter Indian, of course.

This week w went to a party at
a aummrfr camp near here. The
mayor of the village was throwing it,
and there were about 60 people there.
Where they all came from I can't
Imagine. During the festivities I met
a young lady who had been studying
English at Exeter In England, and
ah gav us a lot of addresses
throughout Europe of friends to-looK
up when w got over there. Dorothy
Murray, Mr. and Mr. Greer's daugh
ter, and I wer dancing one night at
th sail de dans In the village. She
a swell danoer. A waits number was
being played, and I asked her for tt.
We were having a swell time till we
noticed thnt w were all alone on the
floor. Not another soul got up, and
there must have been 7S people there.
And Z never could wait, aosh, did
I feel silly? I think the native, frown
upon th dip up here, for they cer
tainly stared.

ple drunk. You do ocoaslonslly, but
not often. The liquor I sold under
government control. In liquor dispen
saries, end csn be bought only on
Dottle at a time. But there Is noth
ing to prevent one from going right
back In and getting another, and an
other, and so far Into the night. la
Kommmgui there Is no liquor com
mission store, so only beer and win
are aold. Beer sells for thirty cent
for a quart bottle, and Is guaranteed
to contain not leaa than two and a
half par cent of alcohol by volume,
and really contains nearly eight. Wine.
I 39c for a very smsll glsss.
According to th. liquor price list
that I sent you from New York, and
to which Mom objected, grain alco
hol and wine are cheaper In th
states thsn here. Alcohol Is J4 a
gallon here (Imperial gallon nearly'
five quarts) and la .5 in New York.
I'm putting this down Just because
Canada la generally associated with
liquor, although I've found out that
when It Isn't prohibited, people aren't
nearly so anxious to get It.
When we get back to New York. X
still have that Interview with Mc-
Intyre to help along th newspaper
situation In Medford, Oregon. And
darned if I know what I'm going to
say to him. As far as I know he'
never beenf to Medford to flan th
Rogue (by the way, as long aa I'v
lived In Medford, I've never fished
there, and probably never will.)
The beard experiment was a dismal
failure. For the first week or so we
let 'em grow, and they wer coming
along quit well. But at the end of
that time we wer Invited to a dance,
nd shaved "em off. Then w got In
th ocll wlm lor good, end haven't
had anything but three-day stub
bl .inc. And I used to hav twlc
that right In Medford. But on th
other hand, th old hair-cut situa
tion has don about everything .for
us that could be expected, t haven't
had a hair cut sine the first week
we wer In New York and won't hav
another till I get back there. Dos
got on her In tha village yesterday,
and today hi skull shows whit
where th sun didn't hav a ehanc
to tan It. Th old wheel about tak
ing my hair down and having a good
cry isn't going to remain a 'wheet
much longer. All I need right now u
something to cry over.
The main reason I'm waiting till
New. York to get mine worked over
la the ten-oent barber school down
In the Bowery. Vlo Dallalre and I
went down there last year to havo
our heads shaved. I got the front
seat, where they were working fcr
their first p. o and got a pretty
fair Job. But Vlo went way In th
back, and got flrat grade day pupil.
For several minute nothing much
happened, then I could hear a lot of
grunting going on down that way.
and when I got my head loose from
the guy who was working on me, I
looked around. Vic' playmate waa
almost sitting on hi head, with scis
sors in both hands. They seemed
to be having a rather exciting time,
but my barber wouldn't let m watch
It long. A few minutes later a petu
lant wall cam floating down th
room. I recognised It as Vic's voice,
and h was saying: "Hey. I cam
in her for a hair cut, not to wrestle
with you."
Boy, did he get a scraping! When
we got out he walked along the street
with hi. hand on his head so peopl
wouidn t be able to se It all. Don s
