Movie Actress Claims She
Married Deeds In China-
Harsh Words Exchanged
In Kansas City Station.
KANSAS CITY", Aug. Jl. (AP)
Word were many and tears were
fw today at the second meeting
of two women, each of whom in
lists she Is the lawful widow of
Captain Ed P. M. Deeds, American
aviator killed In China, whose body
ended Its long Journey home this
morning.
Mrs. Marie Henneasy Shirley Deeds,
auburn haired movie actress, who
accompanied the body from China,
stepped from the train to encounter
the blond Mrs. Betty Deeds, who
flew to Kansas City yestnrday from
Los Angeles.
MtraiiRe Reception
The meeting provided a strange
reception for the body of the world
war filer and soldier of fortune. wflM
snoi aown eight enemy planes as ft
youthful member of the Royal Ply
ing corps.
The surviving rivals of this post- vened,
humous triangle immediately assert
ed their claims to widowhood in
connection with the flier death,
thus resuming a debate begun a
week ago when arrival of the avi
ator's body In San Francisco brought
them face to face for the first time
Mrs. Betty Deeds, first wife of the
airman, was flanked about at Un
ion station this morning by a large
group of friends of Captain Deeds,
who had known her aa the true
spouse of the aviator. She expressed
determination to possess herself of
her husband's body.
Would Bar (Second Wife
The auburn h sired actress, who
asserts she married Deeds In China
four days before his fatal crash, ex
pressed a determination to thwart
the designs of Mrs. Betty De?ds.
"He was my husband and you know
It," said the first wife.
"Say, don't be silly, you left him
and he married me," continued the
second Mrs, Deeds.
Mrs. Marie Deeds placed her arms
about the dead filer's mother, Mrs.
Millie Potvln, as the group moved
through the station. The filer's
mother became hysterical.
"Get away. Don't touch me," she
shouted. "I don't even know you."
As her relatives sought to comfort
her, she cried, "All of you leave
me alone. Oh, that woman. Why
should my son be dragged down
this way."
Pair Near Blows
At the head of the stairway, up
which the party climbed, the two
rivals met again. With hands ex-1
tended they approached each other I
glaring, but friends quickly inter-
"She can't go to the funeral to
morrow." the first wife of the filer
said. "X can't stand to see her there.
I won't let her go."
''You bet your life I'm going to
the - funeral," shouted the second
wife across the wide corridor of Un
ion station.
"It's just another case of a dis
carded wife trying to get back In
the awlm after divorcing her hus
band and then trying to get the
money he left," she explained as she
left the station.
The second wife asserted she had
proof Deeds and his first wife were
divorced In Mexico. She said to
"make It even 'more sure." Deeds
obtained a second divorce, In China.
