RACE AT JUBILEE
Gold Rush Celebration Com
mittee Thinks Up Stunt
For Critters Of All Sorts
With Exception Skunks.
By Leonard Hall
Tho Jacksonville Gold Rutfi Jubi
lee committee this week Is sending
out a call for wild animals. "The
wilder the better," says the request.
Not chat they are planning to have
a home-grown circus over there Aug
ust 19, the Jubilee date, but that a
new and yet old feature is to be
Introduced Into the day's program
that will add a rare touch to a pio
neer ooservance.
For It was back In the days of
Jacksonville, when that town was
busily engaged In' digging out her
$22,000,000 contribution of gold to
the world that miners and Indian
fighters took their amusement from
nature. Quite naturally, without
mechanical .means of pastime, save
for gambling devices, early-day set
tlers turned to wild animals. In
fact, on one famous occasion, one
Jacksunvllllan turned from the prim
itive beasts for his very salvation.
It all came about this way:
Beekman Fleet Footed
One C. C. Beekman, who founded
the strongest Bank the Pacific coast
knew In that day, was renowned as
a footracer. Never, in his time, had
he been beaten and the home town
era were duly proud of their banker.
But it seems that one time an east
erner dropped into town who also
knew something of racing and chal
lenged the Oregon champion. The
race was arranged for the main stem
and bets were made, Beekman's
friends placing heavily on htm as a
cinch winner. But Beekman didn't
win. The easterner was too fleet
for even a banker to keep up with
and indignation was so Intense O. C.
decided he'd keep right on running
till ho was safely up Jackson creek's
wilderness. The losing bettors, never
having seen their hero lag before,
figured Beekman must have thrown
the race and blood was in their eyes.
Bear Starts Itace
As the story goes and many an
old settler in the famous town will
vouch for Its accuracy Beekman en
countered trouble up the creek. He
had Just about recovered his breath
when a huge oear spied him and
another race was on. Quite natur
ally, C. C. forgot all about the re
ception awaiting him and streaked
out fdr the center of town, where
the men were still grouped in angry
conversation. As he tore down Cali
fornia street he managed to keep
about one Jump ahead of the bear,
whlcn certainly had entered Into the
spirit of the chase.
Beekman, however, was as nimble
brained as he was nimble footed, and
saw an opportunity to square him
self. "Wen, boys." he panted, as he
tore past a group of them, "do you
think I'm throwing. THIS race?" The
bear was shot In front of the store
now known as Amy's place.
Comedy Expected
Of course, the Gold Bush Jubilee
wild animals are not expected to be
have as though they were pitted
against footracers, but those in
chargo of the day'e celebration do
think they will add an unforgettable
pioneer touch to the day. It Is
planned to have a wild animal race
between the wild animals. They
will b lined up on the rodeo grounds
during the afternoon (in their boxes
or cages, you can bet) and, at the
firing of a shot, will be released to j
find their way toward a finish line j
not discernible to the critters. .
Comedy Is expected to enter the ;
picture as the animal owners at-1
tempt to shoo their irlghtened en
trants toward the winning tape. Any
wild animal will be eligible, say the
jubilee officials, excepting skunks.
Babbits, squirrels, fox, deer, ' cougar,
bobcats, snakes, porcupine, beaver,
snails or, in fact, anything that Is
wild. Substantial cash and merchan
dise prizes will be offered for win
ners. One of Many Features
The wild animal race or wildcat
race, as the sourdoughs used to call
It, will be but one of the many fea-
. tures of the Gold Bush Jubilee in
Jacksonville Saturday, August 19.

fund from headquarters, Is of good
quality and. In addition to contain
ing a conservative little head In green
ink, a small fir tree Is portrayed
on the left hand side, making the
paper most attractive. The boys were
great'y delighted with the free Issue
as tJicre are always plenty of letters
going home and now stamps are the
only t-xpense.
As the result of a fund provided
by headquarters, some 30 worth of
newspapers have been tub subscribed

Taking a relapse after five straight
wins, the baseball squad dropped a
slugging match to Applegate CCC,
13-16. only to follow up the next
day with a 1113 win over the Gas
quet CCC The team represents one
of t'he most powerful hitting com

few more weeks of practice on team
plays and fielding, the team should
be in championship order.
The boxing team has impatiently
watted a match. Several camps have
been Invited to compete, but as yeti
final arrangements have not been I
completed. However, the boys are
conscientiously working out for the
American Legion tournament at Med
ford. The long anticipated camp perma
nent library Is now installed. In
contract to the circulating library,
which contains practically all fic
tion and moves to another camp
every two weeks, this library con
tains more practical workings along
forestry, nature study and history as
welt ss a few classics. Moreover, It
is the permanent property of the
camp and so will be often used for
reference work.
Q. E. Mitchell, supervisor of the
Siskiyou national forest, as a guest
of 1744 Company CCCC outlined for
Camp Kerby men the underlying
principles back of the forestry de
partment's work program Monday
evening after supper.
Mr. Mitchell explained that the
CCC men were a "gift from heaven
to the forestry department." Work
that, Heretofore, could not be dona
