Ita location on a lid street Just
oft Washington-Square afforded a
certain seclusion and, for New York,
a comparatively quiet retreat. Colin
Hewitt was not superstitious; nor,
Indeed, was the previous tenant
from whom, as It were, he had In
herited the place a fellow writer
who, some two years ago, had left
New York to make his home ln the
south ot France.
It had once been a small stable.
It was reached by a narrow passage
way from the street, and fronted on
a diminutive yard which separated
It from the dwelling to which ln past
years It had been a necessary ad
junct. Colln's friend had metamorphosed
It Into a combination ot literary
workshop and coiy diggings. Colin
bad mads no dhanges save, of
course, to furnish It with his own
effects.
Except for a bathroom and pan
try-kitchen. It possessed but two
"It
rooms: the bedroom above; and the
"shop," as Colin called It, on the
ground floor, that opened, Just as In
the days of th old stable door, di
rectly on th yard.
It was night, near to midnight,
and Colin sat now with his elbows
propped on th edge of his flat
topped desk, bis chin cupped ln bis
hands, his quiet light brown eyes
fixed lntrospectlvely on the figure ot
a young men ot about his own age
who was ensconced ln a lounging
chair opposite the desk and who at
the moment had Just gulped down a
stiff spot ot neat whisky,
Colln's companion had many
aliases; but when, some thirty years
ago, they had both been born ln th
same obscure little village In the
western part ot the state, th other
hsd been christened John, sad bis
surname had been Turner. He bad
flaming red hair. He bad never been
called John; he bad always, been
known as Reddy. ,
They had basa close ohums
through the village school days.
Later Colin had taken a university
course followed by a postgraduate
on abroad, specialising In modern
languages; Reddy, on th other
hsnd, hsd followed numerous
courses ot Instruction under various
wardens In various institutions that
were quit as famous In their own
way as were th seats of learning
Colin bad attended.

IIul- HIDDEN DOOR
BY FRANK L. PACKARD
not until a week ago that Colin, on
on ot bis customary nightly prowls
after "material," had bumped Into
the other ln a joint of excessively 111
repute run by one Nigger Joey.
Sine then
'"TpHAT'S a langh!" exclaimed
--Reddy Turner of many aliases.
"You don't owe me any thanks. I've
introduced you to some of my mob
offhand-like; and that'a as far as
It'll ever go. But what I'm saying
Is that though the papers pat you
on the back and say you know your
onions when H comes to writing
crook stuff better than any other
guy that ever dished It out, you're
only klddjng the public that hands
yon a hatful ot dough every time
you bust Into print."
Colin laughed easily.
"You'r good tonight, Reddy!
Nothing Ilk boneat criticism. Don't
spare my feelings. Oo on."
"That's all right," grunted Iteddy.
"Sure! Now that I'm at It, I'll get It
off my chest. You go out at night
visiting a lot of dumps and hang
outs; yon know a lot ot lags and
cokles and a big shot or two; you're
pals with some of the dicks down at
the Homicide Bureau; you're In

you go out and wrap your arms
around the neck ot sny likely bum
or dam you meet In the street or
In tli parks, bring them In here,
where nobody's to know and where
it's nobody's business, give them a
snort and a bite, and frisk the his
tory ot their lives out ot them.
"Everybody knows you'r on the
level and wouldn't squawk, but all
you're getting out ot It is what you
call color, and the rest Is your Im

will end up by your being put on th a

works."
"Then, perhaps," suggested Colin
quizzically, "you can set me on the
right track?"
"Sure!" Reddy shrugged bis
shoulders. "That's easy! Get Into
the racket yourse'.t,"
Colin heaved himself suddenly up
from his seat and, circling the cor
ner ot the desk, broad-shouldered, a
good six feet In height, stood tower
ing over the msn In the chair. Then
he laid his hand on the other's
shoulders.
Tbs hint of banter was gone, -
"Why don't you cut It out, old
man?" he asked.-
Reddy's only answer sa to fix his
eyes abruptly on th tos ot his boot.
Colin surveyed th other now In
