HANSCOM TAKEN
FOR LIFE TERM

friend and neighbor, Albert J. Ting
leaf, middle-aged farmer, left thu
morning by train for Salem In charge
of Deputy Sheriff Phil Lowd, to start
serving a life sentence In the state
prison. Hanscom Tuesday entered a
plea of guilty to second degree mur
der. Hanscom battered Tlngleaf during
a trivial quarrel, until he died from
Injuries in a local hospital the fol
lowing day. The fatal fracas occur
red outside the dance halt at Eagle
Point.
Dressed In a neatly pressed blue
suit, and a brlght-hued necktie
Hanscom, reconciled to his fata, left
the county Jail. No friends or kin
were present to bid him good-bye,
They had said their partings yester
day. He was handcuffed to Deputy
Lowd, and bade farewell to the Jew
people about the courthouse this
morning.
He was whisked to the Southern
Pacific depot and placed aboard the
10:30 northbound passenger train.
Reaching Balem early this evening,
he will be Immediately "dressed In"
at the penitentiary.
Hanscom. following hU arrest and
sentence, was Inconsolable, and wept
bitterly when arraigned In court.
Since then he has gradually adopted
a more philosophical attitude, and Is
contrite and penitent.
Hanscom has lived all his life In
this county. A violent temper Is
blamed by friends, for his predica
ment. Two years ago he came Into
the news, when his wife filed charges
of non-support against htm. After
several weeks of legal bickering,
Hanscom was brought to court,
friends Interceded, and Circuit Judge
Norton paroled him.
His wife and 18-months -old babe,
returned to thlA city from Los An
geles shortly after the slaying.
JEFFERSON, July 21. (AP) The
new Paclflo highway bridge here,
spanning the' Santlam river will be
dedicated August S, announced Mrs.
Karl Stelwer, general chairman. Les
lie M. Scott, chairman of the state
highway commission, will be the prin
cipal speaker.

partment of Agriculture has Just
notified them that the proper grade
for Merrtrnan's cresmery butter Is
"extra" Instead of "standard" as now
labeled. The grsde for standard but
ter la from 00 to S3, and the grade
for extra la S3 and above. According
to Mr. Pasmore they are able to
reach thla high grade only by paying
a premium for aweet cream.

ern Oregon are good, and that the
Southern Pacific, by faater schedules
and reduction In costs of Icing, la co
operating In every wsy with local
growers, to give them a profitable
season, were reports brought today
by three 'Important 8. P. officials,
who, under the guidance of A. S.
Rosenbaum, district agent, called on
local leaders In the pear Industry to
day. The visiting officials included: W.
W. Hale of Portland, freight traffic
manager; W. O. Fitch of San Fran
cisco, general agent in charge of per
ishable fruit: and R. J. Martin, gene
ral manager of the Pacific Fruit ex
press. In the line of faster service to the
esstern markets, the delegation re
leased the following announcement:
"Southern Paclfle and Union Pa
clfto have succeeded In working out
a schedule for handling this year's
pear crop that will put Rogue river
district In what Is known as 'rone
one,' snd which will result In reach
ing New York In time for tenth morn-
ing delivery instead or eieventn morn- fa
