UNLUCKY MEETING
TIE tiro firU lUrod at ona an
other, and It waa Nelly who
looked away. "I thought you'd be
pure to know," ahe muttered.
With as effort Oeorgie recovered
herself. -"Going
away I Where?"
Her Upi felt at If they were out
In Ice.
"I don't know abroad, some
where. Mli Boyd saw him lait
night, and from what I can make out
there was so end ot a row. Can't
think why she doesn't divorce him."
"Are yon sure?" Oeorgie asked
faintly.
Nelly aodded, and then with a
rush of sympathy she added. "Here,
don't you worry about him. They're
all the same, these film stars."
Georgle hardly heard; she was
struggling desperately to drag her
self out ot the, mists that seemed to
be closing around ber on an sides;
she wanted to say "I don't believe
you," but she could not, because In
her heart she knew It was true.
Nicholas had broken bis word to
her. He was going away.
"Well, I must be off," Nolly said
briskly. . She touched Oeorgle's
shoulder. "Cheer up," she said.
"There are as good fish In the sea
as any that are caught"
The door shut beblnd her, and
Georgle stood up wondering wby
she suddenly felt so cold.
Going away after be had told her
that she was very dear to him. After
he had promised that he would not
go away without telling her.
And Bishop tool Was there no
body in the world who was really
sincere and honest?
The door opened quietly and
Bishop walked In.
"Hullo," he said. "I wanted to talk
to you."
Oeorgie stared at him without an
swering. She remembered that she
bad told htm about her love for
Nicholas; that he was the one per
son In whom she bad dared to con
fide, and all the time he was sending
presents to Bernle. "Running alter
her," Nelly, had expressed It
She shivered and Bishop said,
"What's the matter?"
Georgle shook ber head helpless
ly. She realized suddenly that she
had thought a great deal ot this
man, had set blm up on an absurd
pedestal.
Life waa horrible. Love was a He.'
31sbop said quietly, "I am not go
ing to Germany after all."
Georgia said nothing, and he went
on. "Ot course you know that your
friend Is In London."
She nodded then; there waa a
hard, constricted feeling In her
throat that allowed no words.
"What's the matter?" Bishop
asked again; he put out his hand as
If to lay It on her shoulder, and
hardly knowing what she did,
Georgle struck it down,
"Don't touch me. Leave me
alone," she said passionately, and
before he oould spoak or move to
prevent her, she had fled past him
and out of the room.
"C IGHT nine ten."
JLa
Georgle looked up at the clock
on the shelf which wss striking out
the hours with such maddening
oheerfulness, and shifted her posi
tion a little.
She felt cold and stiff.
The lire had died down, and she
had not once moved to replenish it
during the two long hours during
which she had sat In Nicholas
Boyd's deserted room waiting for
him to return.
Ten o'clockl
There waa a little sound at the
door behind her, and she turned her
head as Boyd's man entered.
He looked at her apologetically
"Shall 1 make up the fire, Miss?"
"Thank you."
He moved forward quietly and
Stirred the dying embers Into a weak
state, adding more coal.
"Mr. Boyd Is late, Mlas," he said.
"Yes."
Georgle put up a hand and
tagged off her hat; ber head ached
mnbearably.
She wondered what this man was
thinking; he had seemed almost un
willing to admit her when she ar
rived. "I suppose he Is coming back?
"Ob yea. Miss."
The man rose from his knees and
looked at her.
"Can I get yon some coffee, or
something warming?" he asked.
"No, thank you."
He turned to the door again and
Georgle asked:
"Is U tonight Mr. Bord Is loiog
way?"
"By the midnight train, Miaa.'
"Thank you."
She did not like to aik to what
destination Nicholas was going.
Where did midnight trains go?
The door dosed softly and she
leaned her head on her hand.
After Nelly left her that after
noon, she bad felt that she did not
care; she had had wild Ideas of
ringing Clifford Asher and of telling
him that she had changed her mind,
bnt tbe Impulse had died away.
At dinner time she had gone to
bed, pleading a headache.
That had mads Evelyn Irate.
"You've no right to have head
aches at your age," she declared, un
sympathetically. "Bishop will be
furious. He baa got tickets for the
theater. I thought yon were so fond
of tbe theater."
Georgle shut her eyes.
"I don't feel well enough to go
anywhere tonight," she said, won
dering vaguely It Bishop had ever
been furlons with anyone In all his
life; he had alwaya seemed to her
to be tbe acme of patience, and en
durance, but perhaps In that also
she was mistaken, as she bad been
about other things.
The time may come when yon
won't have the chance to go any
where," ber mother said sharply.
"You're getting thoroughly spoilt"
She fidgeted round the room, "If
you think I want to go to the theater
alone with Bishop, you're mistaken,"
she added. "He only got the tickets
to please you."
But Evelyn had gone alone with
him after all, and then Georgle had
got up and dressed again, and had
come to Boyd's rooms.
No doubt be would be angry with
her; possibly Nelly bad been right
when she suggested that he was not
worth worrying about Possibly sbe
was not dear to him at all, and ha
had only said It to In his own
words "make things easier."
THERE was a ring at the bell,
nenrartik em nn cHfllw n MnM
not be Nicholas be would surely
have a key.
She heard footsteps crossing th
tiny hall, then voices a woman's
voice.
"Nonsense. I shall certainly wait"
Then the voice of Nicholas's man
"But madam"
Tbe door opened under an lmna-
tlent hand.
Georgia rose to her feet pushlni
back her soft hair; how her head
ached! She felt a little giddy as su
turned round and came face to fact
with Bernle Boyd.
She was in evening dress, some
thing wblte and fluffy, and an ex
pensive fur wrap was slipping from
her bare shoulders. '
She was frowning, as It some
thing had made her angry; Georgia
realised that frown before Bernle
stoppod dead with a little sharp ex
clamation.
The two girls stared at one an
other; Georgle said nothing, shi
felt as It she was an onlooker In s
queer dream.
Then Bernle said blankly:
"What In the world are you dolns
here?"
Oeorgie found her voice with an
offort
"I am waiting to see Nicholas."
"Nicholas I"
Bernle came forward slowly, her
eyes very blue against her careful
make-up. When she was quite close
to Oeorgie she spoke again.
Nicholas I How long hare yov
known my husband?"
Quite a long time," Oeorgie said
slowly; each word seemed a diffi
culty. "Ve came back from Amer
ica on the same boat."
"Isee."
The silence fell again, which Ber
nle broke with a cutting little laugh.
"Hardly tactful ot him. Is It to have
asked us both to bis rooms at tha
same time?"
"He didn't ask ma," Oeorgie salcV
"I Just came."
"Really! And don't yon think It's
rather strange for a girl like you to
be visiting a married man, at this
time ot night?"
"I suppose you think so," Oeorgie
sold, and then: "It's not very late,
Is It?"
"Have yo been hee before T" she
asked,
"Yes.
