Repeal forces throughout aouthem
Oregon united today In a final P
ptl to the voters to get out to the
xll Friday- Several thousand wimple
ballot and instructive pamphlets
vera distributed la Medford and out
lying districts, under the direction of
Fred Colvlg, repeal chairman. - -
"But unless those Interested In re
peal get out to a person and cast
their votes." said Chairman Colvlg,
this vital question will not be settled
satisfactorily for Oregon. It is the
patriotic duty of every olttsen to 4o
at least this much toward helping
our country out of Its present finan
cial dilemma. .-
"In order to clear up any doubt
about the correct manner of voting
cn this question, here It Is: place
your cross between the number and
name of the four candidates who
state they are lnfavor of the proposed
amendment, (that Is, the repeal of
the 18th amendment); then, also,
place another cross between the num
ber and the statement setting forth
that you are In favor of the proposed
amendment. Finally, read your ballot
carefully, so that you are sure you
re placing your mark In the rlgnt
place.'
Last minute reminders In the mat
ter of constructive statistics also
came from the four repeal candidates,
O. M. Roberts, A. C. Nlnlnger, X. O.
Kelly and Bawles Moore, whose names
will appear on the ballot Friday.
.Scouting the prosperity claim of
the drys as a result of prohibition,
Attorney Roberts cited the facts com
piled by the N. 7. research bureau
of the welfare council that: "eight
million three hundred thousand men
and women are at present out of work
In the country; the federal govern
ment is suffering under a deficit of
wo billion dollars; and the country
js paying out 40 million dollars a
year for the enforcement of a law
that cannot be enforced. .
"The bootlegger Is lining his purse
"with from two to three billion dollars
a year," tteclartd B. 0. Kelly, who
field up the Wlckersham report as
proof that this wealth waa taken out
of healthy, government channels and
utilized to finance crime.
"When avowed teetotalers like John
D. Rockefeller, Jr. abandons a life
long crusade In the prohibition
cause, said Rawlea Moore, "and es
pouses repeal as the only safe road
back to temperance, It Is high time
the rest of the nation woke up and
did a little constructive thinking and
acting on the subject." .
"The quickest way," declared A. O.
Nlnlnger of Ashland, "to reduce our
taxes la to vote repeal and start at
least one billion more dollars flow
ing into our government's treasury.
But to put It over in Jackson county,
we need every vote.

TREES
DOUGLAS FIR
SALEM, Ore. (TO) Conformant
mky have their big ' redwoods, but
Oregon can claim the native Douglas
fir aa far from a shrub. : :
Something about big trees learned
at the atate forester's office brought
out that a Douglas Xlr, felled near
Vancouver, B. C, some 30 years ago.
was sMd to be 417 feet high with a
stump diameter of 25 feet. Although
the height, was not officially estab
lished, a photograph Is proof of the
trunk girth.
"In height, the outstanding apecles
are the redwoods, Douglas fir, and
Eucalyptus of Australia," said For
estter Cronemlller.
"In basal diameter, th. redwooda
are pre-eminent aa a class, although
certain Individual trees of other ape
cles sppear to exceed them. And for
volume, the supremacy lies between
the Kauri and the California red
wood.' The tallest eucslyptus of authen
tic measurement was a mountain ash
848 feet high. The tallest known
redwood Is still standing In Bull
Creek flat, measuring between 369
and 868 feet.
"Contrary to general opinion, the
Douglas fir seems to hold supremacy
over the redwood," cald Cronemlller.
"A felled Douglas fir which meas
ured 380 feet by a steel tape was
reported In 1000.
"The great cypress at St. Maria
del Tule, Mexico, haa a diameter at
Vie ground of 40 feet and Is ISO
feet high. The Jsqulttba treea In
Brazil measure up to 93 feet In dl
smeter and 180 feet high.
"The banyan has many trunks and
spresds over an Immense area like a
forest. One tree on the Nurbudda
river '.n western India, measures 3000
high In circumference ut Its mani
fold trunk,, SS0 large and 800 small
ones. A famoua bauyan lu the Cal
cutta botanical gardens has a main
trunk SO feet In ciroumference and
300 manifold trunks.
"A kaura tree of New Zealand Is
said to have the greatest volume,
3.100,000 board feet. It la 33 feet In
diameter, 100 feet to first branch,
and the top la like a feather duater.
"Recently, a redwood tree was
found In Big Lagoon, Humboldt
county, California, which scaled 381,
380 feetof merchantable lumber,
enough to build 33 average homes."
Orsa, Sweden's "tax-free parish," Is
being tsxed for th. first time in 47

SALEM. Ore. (UP) If you take a
baby on a vacation trip with you,
take special precautions for the In
fsnt's welfare.
Among the suggestions offered by
the Oregon health board are the
following: '
Plan the trip so as to avoid delays
and to give , the most privacy and
quiet for the baby.
Do not let anything interfere witn
the baby's regular feeding, elimina
tion, bathing, sleep and exercise.
Wash his face and hands several times
a dsy. Keep him aa cool and quiet as
possible.
Do not give the baby cakes, candy,
bananas, or anything else to keep
him quiet In the train. Irregular feed
ing and unsuitable foods, together
with fatigue and excitement of trav
eling, are likely to make him 111.
Do not let strangers handle him.
Don't use too much clothing. For
a long Journey in hot summer, he
should be barefooted and dressed only
In a band, a diaper and a thin, short
sleeved, low-necked dress or slip.
Have warmer clothing on hand in
case the day cools off suddenly.
On an automobile trip, It will be
found advisable to use a small ham
mock for the bab) A market basket
may be used as a substitute. -
The basket should be srranged like
a bed, with ft thlu mattress, rubber
sheeting, a blanket and. If desired,
a sleeping bsg. A cotton mosquito
netting should be brought along to
cover the basket. A young baby can
stay In the basket throughout the
Journey except when It Is time for
feeding, bathing, changing the cloth
ing, exercise or other care.
For the bottle-fed baby, the health
board adds the following advise:
Boll sli milk used for the baby.
Remember thst the baby'a bottle
must be boiled before It la filled.
Either boll and stopper enough emp
ty bottles at home to last the whole
Journey, or make arrangements with
the porter or steward to have the bot
tles boiled dally In the dining car or
steamer kitchen.
Use dried or evaporated milk for a
long trip. Just before each feeding
time, mix the dried or evaporated
milk with boiling water and then
bring the 'mixture to a boll again.
Carry a traveling stove for the pur
pose.
For a short trip, carry a vacuum
bottle full of cold bottled milk or
milk mixture. Clean, scald and cool
the vacuum bottle before putting the
milk Into It. Boll the milk or mixture,

chill It thoroughly and fill the vacu

vacuum bottle, as It may sour. Do
not use milk from a vacuum after
24 hours.

bottle It must be warmed. At each
