Klondike Kate, Romantic
Figure of the A laska R ush,
Boom Days Visitor Here
'. Br Et Kealon Hamilton.
fth knew boom days In Medford
too Klondike Kate Roc V well, "belle
of th Alaska dance ball, queen In
the land of the sourdough," whose
engagement to John Mataon was re
cently announced as culmination of
a 93-year romance. It was 20 years
ago she appeared In the Rogue River
valley Owney Patton remembers
well.
"I rang the doorbell' he told the
story this morning. "I won't tell
you where. And there stood Kate."
"She says, "What Owney, you
here?'
"And I says 'Kate, I'm here I'd
have known her anywhere. Some fel
low had a crush on her, but I'm not
tellln you who.
,"6he used to ride by and doff her
hat, kind of soldier style. And talk
to me, when there was no one around.
Just the same old Kate, that took the
Chllakoot pass In 1698.
"I almost went with them Med
ford's little Irishman declared, shift
Ing hi pipe and gazing across the
car parking lot he guards on North
Central. Then he waded Into the
story of the gay party of singers and
dancers that left Spokane In 'P8 for
the Klondike, which brought "Kate1
tame, fortune and sorrow.
"I knew Kate well when she was
16 or 10. Her father was a Judge in
Spokane and she played In the old
variety theaters. Vaudeville, you call
It now. That's when the excitement
came, and they all hit for Alaska.
Kate was a fine look in' girl and could
take care of herself In the pinches.
Bbe bad to, to take the Chllakoot
pass. That was tough traveling.
"I couldn't break away, but my
friends all went. There were the La
Moore sisters. All three of them, by
turns, married 'Swift Water BUI one
of the most famous men in the Klon
dike. One time eggs went up to an
impossible price and BUI bought them
all. : Nobody had eggs but 'Swift
Water Bill and the LaMoore slaters
Turning back to Klondike Kate,
Owney continued, "Alexander Pan
fages went up there, too, from Spo
kane. And he struck It rich. It was
in the Klondike that Kate married
him. Then he became the show mag
nate and Jilted her. But I' m not
sayln anything against him. We'll
forget t.v
"Eddie "O'Brien and wife were my
favorite team and their daughter,
Annie. She was the champion buck
and wing dancer. The best tapper In
the world, next to Lula Beeson. Rich
ard K. Fox owner of the Police Ga
zette, which has also gone out of
style, put up the medals and those
girls could dance.
"Annie O'Brien was made mascot
of the second Eagles lodge organised
In the United States and I was vice
president of It. When she went Into
the Klondike, she didn't forget us.
8he sent ua presents galore. A big
stuffed eagle, a fine gavel. The first
night she danced In the mining town
they showered her with 1000 In gold.
Her folks had to help her pick tt up.
Her dad played the concertina and
stamped his foot. That's all the music
Annie needed. She came out with
(85,000. She's married now and set
tled down In Philadelphia.
"I knew Lon Chancy then, too. He
used to play at our place. All those
fellows did.
"Klondike Kate danced and sang
and did acts with partners. She was
really a brunette, but tried to blonde
up a bit several times. But she was
a good girl, then. She set Pantuges
up In business. I never liked him and
he never liked me. I was young and
free then and I used to give the girls
a swing around, myself.
"They were a happy lot. Happier
than folks today, who have millions'
Owney puffed again on his pipe, send
ing rings far into the sunshine. "Poor
one week, the next fn satins and lace
with feathers In their hats. But al
ways the same. I remember the wo
man who played the negro wench in
'Birth of a Nation knew her as soon
as she came on the screen. She got
ner start sewing for the girls.
"I never heard of the sourdough
Kate's marrying. But he knows who
he's gettln Pan tag-a was her first
husband. I'm godfather to his son-in-law,
John Con&adlne, Jr. His father
was In the circuit for years, known
ss 'Sullivan' and Consadlne Big Tim
Sullivan was killed by a train. They
slmost burled him In the potter's
field and then some guy, like me,
came along who knew who he was.
Do you know what he used to do
for the Tammany gang? Charter a
boat, take them to Coney Island and
buy out the place. Spend 10 and 13
thousand on a party and then they
slmost burled-him In a potter's field.
"And they talk about great men
today. They never saw any. I'm not
claiming that was any Sunday school
crowd. But they never shook the lit
tle fellow down." Owney stretched
himself to his greatest stature. "They
always shook down the big guy. Then
they wonder why it's such a great
country, well, they've never seen it
as Owney has."

I learned about Toasting
from my husband
I used to think that "Toasting"
wis just n advertising phrase.
But oneday my husband explained
to me what "Toasting" is and
what it does. Where he learned
it ill, I don't know, but I began

even more since I am a woman
