Ore.. July 14. (Spl.) A determined
battle against pine beetles Is well
underway In the Crater Lake region
with Indications the infestations will
be completely checked at the end of
the current season. Approximately
nine different species of trees are be
ing treated to prevent the further
spread of the tree Insect scourge.

Sol In sky. Insect control expert, ap
proximately 13.000 trees are to be cut
down, a number somewhat leas than
during 1933 when encouraging prog
ress in control work was reported. Two
camps of Emergency Conservation
program workers are taking an active
part In the current Insect campaign.
Despite their Inexperience In the
woods, they are showing satisfactory
progress under the tutelage of a nunv
ber of experienced woodsmen, cach
ing them the fine points of tree fall
ing and treating.
Trees being treated this year In
clude the ponderosa pine, lodgepole,
sugar pine, white pine, white bark
ptne. alpine fir. white fir, Shasta red
fir and hemlock. The fir trees are
attacked by beetles of a different
species than those attacking the
pines, with infestations found in scat
tered portions of the park.

of less than 15 minutes Is necessary
to reach the station, In the charge

Officials who must find the solu
tion may have a few sleepless nights.
No one else needs to.
The underlying truth is that this
administration has about as much
powsr as there ts on earth to meet
its problems. It can take Industrial
giants by the ear and spank them
like school children. It has billions
ready to boost purchasing power.
Also, public psychology has been
so far restored that It Is no longer
timid about difficulties arising from
time to time.
Therefore, thoso who have their
feet on the ground are interested
solely In seeing how the administra
tion works' Itself out.
Strong inside pressure has been
exerted to make President Roosevelt
chart a new course. A certain
amount of deflation has been ad
vlaed. That weapon was used very
effectively for the same purpose In
the poet-war period. It kept prices
from going up too fast. It put a
rein on the business horse.
At least one Influential party man
has been trying to sell the schema
to the administration for use now.
His leng distance telephone calls
have even reached to the White
House. He believes It would be an
effective club against Industrial
slackers.
The thing ts, tt Is too dangerous.
It may be displayed as a weapon, but
not seriously employed. Other more
effective means of accomplishing the
same results will be sought first.
People are trying to spread the
word around that No. 1 brain trustee.
Prof. Moley,. is coming home from
London a beaten man. They point
to the current ascend ansy of State
Secretary Hull.
The trouble la they do not under
stand how Mr. Roosevelt works.
Mr. Hull Is the bands-across-the
sea men of this administration. He
la the brotherly love boy.
The heavier duties devolve on the
hard-boiled nationalist, Dr. Moley. .
When President Roosevelt wanted
to push his strong national program
at London he sent Dr. Moley. Now
that the purpose has been accom
plished, Mr. Hull has been left there
to salve the wounds.
The point Is thai each man has his
particular Job In the Inside picture.
Each bervea his purpose. Their du
ties .'arely conflict. When they do.
Dr. Moley can usually be found on
top.
The new super-cabinet scheme was
devised because of the confusion
backstage here. During recent weeks
It has been just like war times.
Officials .have been running around
in all directions. A clear Idea of
what it was all about was lacking.
There was no co-ordinstlon anywhere.
Tho Ice pool went to one authority
In tho industrial control aetup. They
were told the administration did not
want a code for that Industry. Later
they saw another authority and he
told them the government did want
an ice code. For days they did not
know whether they were In or out
of the setup.
The soft drink people had exactly
the same trouble.
A simple solution would have been
to mix the Ice and the soft drink
and enjoy It. That Is What the
super-cabinet ts supposed to do.
There are a lot of things .the sen
ate tailed to find out about Wall
Street. One la that orders frequently
are placed to buy stocks far above
the price they are quoted.
The specialist In General El e Ctrl o
stock could have testified that when
the stock was at 31, he had large
orders to buy It as soon as It got
to 34.
The Idea ts that stocks have cer
tain resistance levels. Certain pur
chasers were convinced that if Gen
eral Eiectrio ever passed 34, It would
go to 30. It did.
General Johnson has been Insisting
he has 63 codes In his sleeve ready
to start. They must consist largely
of the type offered a few days ago
by a contractor w.ho strolled It no
Johnson's headquarters. This fellow
submitted a code for the contracting
Industry of the United States.
Investigation disclosed he was not
yet a contractor, but only hoped to
be. He was trying to get a contract
from ihe government. He had neg
lected to consult the others In his
Indutary.
