tional Synthetic Wood Co. of Wil
mington, N. C. This firm sold the
government 30.000 cots at 93.10 ind
6000 at 93.25.
Conservation Coramiuloner Robert
Fechner had nothing to do with
placement of these orders.
The only contract he has essayed
was that with the Be Vler Co. for
, $1.40 toilet kits.
President Roosevelt is expected to
visit Puerto Rico next winter or
spring. As did Herbert Hoover, he
will make the voyage aboard a battle
ship. One of the ports of call probably
will be the Virgin Islands.
Former President Hoover spent five
hours at this West Indian outpost
and left to declare the Virgin Islands
were "the world's most effective poor
house."
It may be that F. D. wants to take
the curse off the abandoned naval
base.
He will be aided Immeasurably If
prohibition Is repealed as promptly
as he foresees. Rum was the princi
pal product of the Virgin Islands.
Now they're reduced to bay rum and
nobody gets excited about that.
A return of hard liquor would give
y the islands & boom that would warm
the cockles of the natives' hearts.
Even without rum the Islands may
come back. ,
Government scientists have discov
ered that a plant flourishes there
from which comes the extract for
bug sprays. America now Imports
large quantities from the Orient.
We paid Denmark 825,000,000 for
this naval coaling station. Then
turned with the rest of the world to
fuel oil. We'll take our Investment
"back In rum or bug powder and no
questions asked.
An Interesting development is im
pending In connection with forma
tlon of Industrial codes.
Newspapers are as liable to regu
lation aa any other form of Industry.
Irregularity of newspaper hours Is
notorious. When a reporter gets on
a hot story he may go forty-eight
hours or more without sleep to wind
It up.
A New York tabloid with huge
circulation has established the prac
ticability of the five-day week pos
sibly excepting a reporter's occasion
al forays Into the realms of smash
news.
First test of the possibility of
codifying newspapers may come when
the Industrial Recovery admlnlstra
i tlon reaches the paper Industry.
Some of the larger newspapers and
newspaper chains control their own
forests and pulp mills. They even
have steamship lines to bring their
newsprint to them.
In this field they are not In direct
competition with anyone. They

merely are supplying their, own
needs.
It the question is raised the de
cision will be Interesting.
Other industries have their pecu
liar problems. This la notably true
in the specialized groups with com
paratively small capitalization.
Take the soil pipe Industry for
example. The mechanical process for
manufacture of soil pipe requires
constant attention of a laborer for
ten hours on a stretch.
The Industry overcame the gov
ernments demand for a shortened
working week by submitting a code
that called for a 30-hour week three
days of ten hours each.
Pay will amount to $12.75 weekly.
The Industry claims It will spread
employment by about 50 per cent.
That will pull a lot of men off the
relief rolls.
When the London Economic con
ference gets around to serious discus
sion of International trade If It
lasts that long one very unpleasant
obstacle is going to be encountered.
World shipping tonnage has been
Increased 100 per cent In the last
30 years. Trade has diminished 33
per cent. Two-thirds of the world's
bottoms are now tied up because
there just isn't any freight.
What to do about this is making
many a delegate reach for an aspirin
Instead, of a highball. The French
plan for pooling will get close Inspec
tion for concealed Africans,

Policeman-Gerard of River Forest, t

Lagrange and announced:
"I'm John Factor.
Torture Threatened
He was taken to the police station
and-later was brought to his Chicago
hotel, where he told Captain Gilbert
and Police Lieutenant William Blaul
that his abductors had demanded
(500,000 ransom and had threatened
him with machine guns and a pair
of scissors when he told them he
couldn't raise the money.
When they demanded that he get
the money from rich friends he said
he told them that he "wouldn't put
them on the spot."
A farm house, northwest of Chicago
overrun with cockroaches was believ
ed by Factor to have been his place
of imprisonment, but he was not cer
tain because during the entire period
of his captivity he was blindfolded
with tape, which was not removed
until a few minutes before his re
lease.
"They never harmed me, but they
were pretty tough in their threats,
Factor said. "Once they put machine
guns against me one In back and
another In front and they said they
were going to kill me.
"Another time they held a big pair
of shears close to my face and let me
feel it. They said they were going
to cut my ears off."

PONTIAC the Economy Straight Eight b one
of the outstanding successes of the year. It is show
ing the way to big-car comfort and Straight Eight
performance at low price and with operating econ
omy. Everybody koows that only a Straight Eight
can give Straight Eight performance.
Pontiac is the Economy Straight Eight. Ask any
Pontile owner and yoo'U find it is giving 1 5 miles
or more to the gallon and gives that not only for
a few thousands of miles, bat for many thousands
after you'd expect k to show signs of wear.
One of Pondac's outstanding features is Pisber
Controlled Vtntilation, Many say no car can be con

Try a demonstration. Let Pontiac itself con
