rested Monday by the sheriff's office.

Mrs, Howard Hllkey. who sldes
in the Antelope district about -16
miles from Medford, reported to the
city police this morning that her 16-year-old
daughter placed some bis
cuits in the oven yesterday about
13:30, Tcft home, and has not been
seen since. Officers were asked to
aid In locating the girl.
According to Mrs. Hllkey, her
daughter was wearing khaki hiking
trousers, and was carrying a blanket
role and a small suitcase. She has
red hair, which she wears In a long
bob.
The girl's uncle, John Hilkey. re
sides on DeBarr avenue, In Medford.

Announcement was made today
that an extensive canning campaign
will be conducted during August
and September by the Jackson coun
ty relief committee, under the direc
tion of Mrs. Mabel C. Mack, county
home demonstration agent.
In order to carry on this work,
throughout the county, pressure
cookers and sealers are required, as
at present there are not enough
available. C. R. Braley of the head
quarters said today.
"We are asking that those who
will volunteer to loan these to the
.Jackson county relief committee for
this canning project, telephone Mr.
Braley at the relief office. No. 624,"

napers. John C. Lyle. Crawfordsviue,
O.. rural mall carrier, ohecked his
mall pouch today, found It had not
been opened, and prepared to return
to hla Georgia home.
Lyle came to Raleigh early today
from Wake Foreat, 10 miles irom nere,
where three escaped Georgia oonvlott,
who have kidnaped four men in tneir
flight, released him last night.
The kidnapers, two whit men ana
a nero. left Lyle tied to th rafters
of a bam but he soon released him
self and telephoned Orawfordsvllle
from a nearby farmhouse.
Although the kidnaper took i
from Lvle. he ssld no threats were
mads against him and hla mall waa
returned to him when he wa put
out near Wake Foreat.

the Sexton brothers away; that he
had bnn with Brecheen outside when

and Brecheen asked: "Is that where
they keep the ballots?" and that he
had seen Fehl In front of the audi- I

10:35 when he went to brd the "con

Alibi Bo 'tis Laid
Mary Sweeney, 704 West street, a
former county employe, was the first
witness called by the state to prove
the contention that Schermerhorn
laid foundations for an alibi.
Tho witness testified she was In
fche sheriff's, offlco on the night of
the bo Hot robbery between 7 and
shortly after 0 o'clock, and that
Schermerhorn came in twice, and she
was Introduced to him by Chief Dep
uty oiga Anderson. Schermerhorn
made u trip to the Jail and returned.
Shortly afterward he returned and
creelved a phone call, saying when
the cell ended, "That m from the
Daily News. J. will see Viem on may
way down, as X want to be In bed by
9:30." It was then about 9 o'clock.

about b:10. Miss Anderson was do
ing extra work at night.

and that about 0:30 he saw Srher
merhorn leaving the rear of the court
house, and saw Earl PeM standing
out In front of the court house. Hs
left about 10 o'clock with C. Jean
Conners, w.ho plead guilty to partici
pation in the vote looting.
La Claire testified that about this
time be knew the ballots had been
stolen and had It fully confirmed
the next day.
The witness said that after 10
o'clock he went to Witham's service
station to "work on an auto." and
he naa "oeen wandering anout town
and in and out of the Dally News
all day and had seen Conners there.

for construction of a power dam at
the Grand Coulee site on the Co
lumbia river was signed today by the
Columbia Basin commission of the
state of Washington and the United

Under the contract signed by El-
wood Mead, commissioner of reels-1
matlon, and E. F. Banker, chairman
of the state commission, the cost of I
preparing the plana and drawing up
estimates of the cost of the project
