structlon activities are being placed
underway on four contracts ln and
near Crater Lake National PnPrk.

according to John R. Sargeant, resi
dent engineer for the federal bureau
of public roads, stationed at Crater
Lake. Employment of these men is
being handled entirety through the
relief agencies of Klamath and Jack
son counties. No laborers are ae
cepted without the sanction of these
agencies,

the rim road and the road to Dia
mond lake, A contract for 6 miles

Notch in the park, covering 4
miles. A grading contract of 18
miles has begun on the Union Creek

grading waa completed last year.
All men to be employed on the

of pay averaging 80 cents per hour
with board set at 85o per meal. It

Monthly meteorological note for
June, as compiled by W. J. Hutchi
son, local observer, show mostly sea
sonable weather prevailed during June
except that precipitation fell consid
erably below normal- Clear aklea or
broken cloudiness predominated. Tem
perature means compared very closely
to averages of previous years.
The month opened with a light
shower on the first In the early morn
ing. Clearing aky later in the morn
ing was followed by heavy southeast
erly winds, shifting later to north
west. Some amall damage resulted
from the wind to shade treea ln the
city. Partly cloudy or clear skies pre
vailed with moderate temperatures
for the next five days. On the 7th
cloudy threatening weather set in
with a very light rain occur! ng. fol
lowed on the 8th by a somewhat more
copious ehower. Traces of precipita
tion were recorded on the 8th and
10th. Beginning the llth settled sum
mer weather with mostly moderate
temperatures held until the 94th. Re
freshing rains of the 24th and 25th,
although rather light, did much to
stimulate crop growth.
No exceptional extremea of tem
perature were recorded during June.
Maximum temperatures averaged
somewhat below normal, while mini
mums were the reverse and averaged
slightly higher than usual. A monthly
high temperature of 97 degrees oc
curred on the 13th and the lowest. 40
degrees, on the 1st.
Precipitation amounted to 0.18
inch, a deficiency of 0.&8 Inch for the
month. The expected thunderstorms
which ordinarily occur ln June failed
to materialize. Heavier rains, how
ever, were experienced ln scattered lo
calities in the southern portion of the
valley at times when light showers
fell In the vicinity of Medford. Some
slight damage to cherrloa ln the Ash
land district was reported aa having
resulted. Seasonal precipitation, of
course, suffered a further loss and at
the close of the month totaled 14.88
Inches, showing a deficiency of 2.00
inches.
During the heavy winds on the
first, a maximum velocity (for five
minutes) was registered at 80 miles
per hour from the northwest. Ousts
were estimated to be about 40 miles
an hour during the blow. Wind veloci
ties as an average were rather high
for June, being 7.4 miles per hour.
The total wind movement for the
month recorded 5,295 milee, a greater
amount than has been recorded in
previous Junes. Prevailing winds
were from the northwest.
