AUSTRALIAN ACE
DEFEATS VINES
FOR NET TITLE
WIMBLEDON, England, July T
P) Jack Crawford, Aiutrtllan ftar.
won tho final round ot the men's
a Ingle and WltU It th Wimbledon
championship from EUswortb Vines
today, 4-0, 11-8. fl-2, 3-8, 0-4.
The Australian became, temporarily
at least, king of the tennis world as
ho added the prized Wimbledon title
to that of bis native land and of
Prance.
His bitter fire set victory over
vines, who won the title last year.
follows by only a few weeks a straight
set victory over Henri Cochet. once
great ace of Prance, in the finale of
the French championships.
It waa the eighth meeting between
the new and the old t (tie holders of
Wimbledon with Crawford victor now
In three matches to fire for the
American champion.
Vines eaally took the first set 6-4
but Crawford then came back to run
off the next two, the third rather
easily. When the American came
flashing back with all his old speed
to win 0-3 and even the match U
seemed as though he had the cham
pionship again at his mercy, but
Crawford, a real stylist of the courts
and almoflt aa big as Vines, was not
to be denied and smashed through
to victory to gain rightful ranking as
the leading player of the world.
