Why No Glenn Extra?
JUDGING by statements of certain attorneys, and various
anonymous phone calls and communications, the members
of the Good Government congress are properly burned up by
the fact that the Mail Tribune did not issue an "extra" on the
John Glenn verdict.
This fact is given as an example of this paper's DEEP
SEATED PREJUDICE. In all the other cases, where convic
tions were returned, it is CLAIMED extras were issued, and
the story plastered all over the front page; whereas in this
acquittal, there wa's, to quote one of the Good Government con
gress attorneys, ''only two inches in one comer of the page I"
IN one sense this is a trivial matter, and would be disregarded
had the leaders of the Good Government congress not insist
ed upon making it another burning issue, and broadcasted it,
from the housetops, as another example of the intolerance and
unfairness of the so-called "subsidized press."
As a matter of fact the Glenn acquittal was treated by this
newspaper JUST AS IT DESERVED TO BE TREATED, as
an important news item, but not as one calling for an "extra",
or any undue or sensational emphasis.
IN tbe first place the Glenn verdict instead of occupying only
TWO inches in one corner of the page occupied 12 INCHES
on the FIRST page, given equal prominence with the death of
Lieut. Burrell Milo Bauoom, and the starting of the Schemer-
horn trial.
In the second place, the Mail Tribune did not issue a paper
July 4th, but aa usual allowed its employees to enjoy this im
portant national holiday. As a result the Glenn verdict handed
down, early in the morning of the Fourth WAS, on the after
noon of the following day, OLD news. Everyone knew about it.
The grape-vine as usual ha"d done its work. "
Under such circumstances no newspaper in the world would
issue an "extra" or play up the "old story" to the 'exclusion
of everything else. The determining factor in news value, is
time. The value of news is in inverse proportion TO time.
That is, the less time the more news value; the more time, the
less news value, etc., eta.
TpHffiDLT our Good Government congressmen, as usual, are
basing their criticism upon ignorance of the true facts. The
Mail Tribune did not issue extras for ALL the other ballot
case verdiots. Only ONE extra was issued, namely in the
LaDieu case. That was the first case to be tried, obviously
it bad a greater news value than similar cases following it. It
wag the first "break" the first indication of how the wind was
blowing.
To many perhaps the Jones verdict seemed more important.
But there was no Mail Tribune "extra" issued. Conditions did
not justify it. The Jones verdict was therefore only given the
prominence that the Glenn verdict WOULD have been given,
had this paper had an issue, the day following, instead of TWO
days following.
WE trust that makes it clear. It should to anyone capable
of recognizing the truth when it is presented. But we
have no illusions about it making any Impression upon the lead
ers of the Good Government congress.
They only see what they WANT to see; only believe what
they LIKE to 'believe. Not argument or reasoning, only TIME,
can cure them.
But as their oharges and claims in this matter trivial as
they are in themselves fairly represent the peculiar psychosis
from which they, and this valley, are suffering, we decided this
comment and elucidation justified.
We have long since abandoned any attempt to show the
Good Government congress leaders the error (and the danger)
of their ways. They are past instruction, and must be left to
that best but sometimes extremely severe teacher, EXPERI
ENCE. But we are interested in showing the people the rank and
file the true situation existing, and the true facts, as they
come up from time to time. HENCE the above.
The Human Comedy
A S has often been stated in this column this local situation
would be amusing if it were not so TRAGIC. Fortunately
perhaps for those who are FORCED to take it seriously, there
are moments when the tragedy is submerged in the human oom"
edy of it all.
Such a moment came to this newspapor yestorday, when one
of the Good Government congressmen attorneys, with particular
solemnity, complained of the way the Mail Tribune had abused
County Judge Fohl, one of the principal defendants in the ballot
burning cases.
"ABUSED JUDGE FEHLr And this from an attorney
representing an organization which has from the time of its
formation, secured its intellectual pabulum, and derived its
standards of editorial propriety, from the columns of the Daily
News, when directed by L. A. BANKS ; and the Record Herald,
as directed by the aforesaid JUDGE FEHLI
"Abuse, villification, misrepresentation." Certainly it is to
laugh I
We don't blame Assistant Attorney General Moody for re
marking on the absence of vindictiveness toward the defendants
in tbe columns of this paper, the complete absence of editorial
comment, upon cases under trial; the fact that this paper has
not said HALF, what, without any violation of accepted jour
nalistio ethics, it COULD have said.
Mr. Moody, too, haa been a reader of the old "News" and
the still functioning, scandal and blackmail sheet the Pacific
Record-Herald.
JUST to bring the matter home, briefly, let any citizen CON
TEMPLATE what would have filled the columns of these
two papers, Jisd County Commissioner Nealon, let us say, been
so unfortunate as to have been indicted for participation in a
ballot burning sortie, on our duly elected Judge Fehl's court
house I Or imagine, the jouraalistio reaction, if District Attor
ney Codding had so forgotten himself as to fill Probation Offi
cer Amos Walker with buckshot, when he tried to serve a tnm'
inons at his doortl
Just think it over, Mr. and Mrs. Reader, contemplate the
tableaux of Judge Fehl's attorney, complaining his client has
been ABUSED, by the press of Jackson county and then keep
straight face if you can!

80 THE SKIN' ABSORBS NICOTINE?

nictoine solution (one of the various

pests) and his
clothes were wet
through with the
poison for an area
the size of the
palm. He contin
ued working, but
In about 15 min
utes he was taken
with nausea and
faintness. He took
a drink of water
and lmmedltaely
continued to vetch. He went out in
the air and f ou nd himself In a
drenching sweat. His breathing be
came labored and painful. He was
taken to the hospital In an ambu
lance. On the way to the hospital
he lost consciousness and did not
recover consciousness till three hours
later. He lay semi-conscious, writh
ing, moaning, gaping, witts rapid 40
respirations. Irregular heartbeat 86,
rectal temperature lowered to SS.6
P., pupils pinpoint, pulse feeble, ex
tremities cold, no tendon reflexes.
They were puzzled aa to the diag
nosis. The patient was given stim
ulating hypodermic Injections and
external heat applied.
Next day he was recovered except
for some oppression under the breast
bone, weakness and slight nausea.
He wa discharged on the fourth day.
Hla clothei bad been put away In a
paper bag and they were still damp
where they had been wet wlt,h the
nicotine solution. But he dressed
and went his way rejoicing.
But within an hour after leaving
the hospital he was again seized with
nausea, vomiting, sweating and diffi
culty in breathing (painfully remi
niscent of the first cigar, eh, fel
lows?) and was readmitted to the
hoepitAl. He was not so sick this
time, but left after four more days.
Three weeks later he still complain
ed of weakness, sweating, vertigo on
change of position, insomnia, nerv
ousness snd constant sense of pres
sure under the breast bone, worse
on exertion.
(Here It Is fair to ssy that an In
surance company was Interested in
the man's disability. That may ac
count for some of the man's symp
toms that persisted).
The man was In good health four
months later, but he said he was
unabld to go Into a greenhouse where
the nicotine spray was being used
without suffering immediate nausea.
The man, by the way, has long
smoked' and still enjoys five or six
pipeful dally.
The Boston doctor reporting the
case arbitrarily asserts that the nico
tine was absorbed directly through
the skin. Then, like a regular "sci
entist," he cites some experiments to
sustain his funny notion. The fur
was csrexuiiy snaved rrom part of
the belly of a cat, unaesthetized but
fastened on its back to a board. Borne
of the 40 per cent nicotine solution
used for spraying was poured over
this area and gently sopped snd rub
bed in with gloved fingers. Tbe area
thus wet with nicotine was covered
with an inverted glass dish held
down tightly with adhesive tape.
Why? The "scientist" says "to pre
vent the fumes from escaping.'
Aha so there are fumes to be
taken Into consideration? The meth
od described would hardly prevent
fumes from escaping, though It
might make evaporation less rapid.
It takes very little nicotine fumes
to poison a small animal when In
haled. The experiment is not scien
tific at all, unless control animals
are used with provision against In
halation of any of the fumes.

Grants Pass, July 6.
Ed note: The Mali Tribune has
only mentioned one of the ballot theft
defendants as a Spanish war veteran.
This waa Jailer Olenn, who, according
to reliable reports, was acquitted
largely because he WAS a Spanish war
veteran. Had he been convicted he
would have net his pension his chief
source of support. It Is rather amus
ing to be accused of "partiality" for
having so identified Mr. Olenn. But
that is only another example of the
twisted thinking and crazy prejudices
existing hereabouts. The attorneys
for the defense were the ones who
brought this Spanish war fact out
and rang all the changes on it. The
waving qf the flag and the over
emphasis placed on Glenn's war rec
ord, Indeed won the day for the forces
