Bible Meeting

We wsnt to take this means to say
a heart-felt thank you to the kindly
people who helped In any way to
make our Young Peoples Bible con
ference such a fine affair. Young
people from seventeen different com
munities will go back to their Sun
day schools and other Christian ac
tivities to tell about the splendid
time they had here. Wa had many
words ct praise and not one word of
criticism concerning your very Im
portant part helping to take care of
the visitors from scores of them.
Seventy young people were regis
tered from outside places, and our
own young people brought the regis
tration up to 119 young people. We
did not register any older people.
Average attendance In the six atudy
periods reached nearly one hundred.
We believe that this was the larg
est Withering of young people for
plain Bible study ever held in this
part of the state. Wa have spoken
to miny groups of young people but
never to a more Interested group
than these. Bible study la growing

We thank our committees, the par

Laws Among Chief Work
Of Last Congress Session

WASHINGTON. July 8. (API !
New taxes were imposed by the last
session of congress, old ones were
continued and important changes
were made In the law to prevent
escape from taxation through tech
nicalities.
The new taxes, and the ones re
newed, were imposed partially to I
give the treasury special funds with
which to pay interest and establish
a reserve for retiring the billions In
bonds needed by the recovery pro
gram, so that bond buyers would
have confidence In their Investment.
Some money also was needed for
ordinary running expenses.
The hole plugging changes In the
law were a direct result of disclos
ures that some of the wealthiest men
have paid little or no Income tax
during the recent hard years. They
made use of a law which permitted
subtraction of losses suffered one
year from Income received In two
years.
All the taxes imposed by the bil
lion dollar revenue law of 1032 for
the last year and the current one,
were continued through 1034.
The three per cent tnx which had
been added to every home electric
light bill will, after September 1, be
paid by th light company.
The federal gasoline tax was In
creased for the present fiscal year

normal Income tax rate on corpora
tions was increased from 14 to
14,4 per cent.
An annual tax of one dollar a
thousand was imposed on capital
stock of corporations.
These taxes may be ended by tha
president whenever the eighteenth
smendment la repealed, giving the
treasury revenue from liquor taxes,
or as soon as the ordinary budget
Is balanced, whichever of the two
happens first.
The new law provides that all tax
returns to the government may be
made publlo under presidential reg
ulation, to the extent that Mr. Roose
velt may order, No such order has
been tailed yet.
The main change to block, tax es
cape: From January 1, 1033, a taxpayer
cannot deduct net losses or losses
from sale or exchange of bonds or
stocks except in the year In which
such losses occur. These limitations
apply, equally to Individuals, corpor
ations and partnerships, with private
banks denied former exemptions.

$177,813 In miscellaneous levies.
Federal tax payments for Oregon,
are .18 per cent of the total, popula
tion la .77 per cent of the nation.
California, with a population of
4.61 per cent of the total, paid 4.00
per cent of the taxes. Washington
paid .37 pr cent from a population
of 1.27 per cent. Idaho's psyment
was ,'ja. population .88. New York
contributed 25.36 per cent of all taxes
paid the government, from a popu
lation of 10.32 per cent.
