PEAR TREES NOW
Bplder mites have made their ap
pearance In pear treea during the
put few daya and general leaf Injury
hai occurred In aeveral different
orcharde. Growers are adrleed by L.
p. WUcos. county agent and L. O
Centner of the 80. Oregon Experi
ment Station to be on the watch
from now on and apply control mea
aurea when their pear treea first thow
signs of leaf damage.
Because of the epray residue prob
lem, growera are requested to consult
their county sgent as to the best
program to use In case Infestations
appear In late July and August.
, The mites, commonly called red
spidera may well be classed as a
major pest to fruit trees and growers
should be able to recognise the
symptoms of Infeststlon snd be pre
pared to 'apply control measures Im
mediately. The mites work on the under sides
of the leaves, causing such leaves to
turn brown and black and later to
fell off. Such a defoliation la harm
lul, not only to the fruit now present
but also to the formation of fruit
buds representing next season's crop.
To prevent such damsge and yet not
complicate the fruit cleaning process,
growers should apply control meas
ures If signs of Injured leaves are
noticed within the next ten days.
The D'AnJou and Bosc varieties will
probably show damage first, so watch
these trees cloe,
' Rocommendeo aontrol Is aa fol
lows: On pears use medium summer
ell emulsion at the rate of l'i gal
lons to the 100 gallons of water.
D'AnJou, Boeo and Cornice varltlea
probably are the only ones that need
receive this treatment. Bartletu
should not be sprayed with oil emul
sion spraya at this time, If they are
to be cleaned and packed for eastern
shipment.
. On applea use 14 gallons of light
summer oil emulsion to the 100 gal
lons of water. Successful control
depends a great deal on the applica
tion, spray thoroughly the under
, aides of all leaves, especially. those In
toward the center of the tree.

BERLIN (AP) Plans for relieving
the unemployment situation advanc
ed by previous government have
been rolled Into one gigantic measure
by the Hitler cabinet in an effort to
pull Germany out of the rut.
Throughout the plan which calcu
lates to spend a billfon marks, or
$250,000,000. and put 1, 250.000 men
back to work in field, factories and
offices, one mar observe Bruenlng,
von Pa,jen and von Schleicher, all
of whom busted themselves with the
same problem.
iMeniploymrnt Cut Claimed
Broadly speaking the plan la based
on two theses, lightening of the debt
snd tax burdens through various
means, and stimulation of buslneas
by means of treasury loans to groups.
Individuals and municipalities.
The Hitler administration claims
that thus far It has brought down
the number of unemployed to 6,000.
000, roughly a million less then the
high point this winter and some
CO ,000 less thsn the low of lsst year.
The 1.000.000,000 marks will be
amortised through budget levies over
the next five years.
Replacements Reduce. Taxes
Tax exemptions will be allowed for
various machinery replacements In
factories, as long as the purchases
are mode within Germany.
Funds will be put at the disposal
of water and electricity worka for
extension of their services and to
municipalities and districts which
will use the money for Improvement
of canals, subways and public build
ings. These latter loans will be In
terest free, but other loans will bear
a nominal rate.
Frlta Relnhardt, state secretary in
the ministry of finance, estimates
that the pis nwtll absorb 1.2ft0,000
persona from the floating supply of
unemployed workers. He Indicated
that additional laws would be pro
mulgated by the cabinet from time
to time as conditions warrant.
Embraced In the blanket law are
propoaol whereby tax evaders, un
til October 1 of this year, may avoid
the risk of Jail sentences and fines.
A tax evader whose conscience
bothers him may go .to his lawyer
and pay the amount of the evasion.
Thereupon the lawyer sends It In his
own name .to the finance depart
ment and receives a receipt, This
receipt Is a guarantee against future
prosecution.
The government said this would be
the last amnesty for tax dodgers.
Private funds established to alle
viate the lot of the unemployed may
be deducted In their entirety from
the gross Income In figuring Incomes
taxes the new law provides.
