NIcholaa could see Into the ball.
That looked dingy too, though
thanka to Mrs. Lovelock It i
scrupulously clean.
NIcholaa rang the bell; It went
slanging unmusically through the
house, dying away In a faintly pro
testing tinkle, and then for some
leconds there was unbroken silence.
He rang again, and this time there
was a step in the hall, a light step
which could only belong to Oeorgle,
snd a moment later her band had
pulled the door open wide, and she
was looking at him.
It was Nicholas Boyd who spoke
Brst
"What In the name of Heaven
have you been doing to yourself?"
"How did you hurt your eye?" Boyd asked.
Tbe hot blood rushed In a orlm
son wave from hor chin to the roots
of her hair, and she put up one band
to cover the ugly brulBe which was
disfiguring the left side of her face.
"Nothing ... I knocked myself,"
she said with a rush.
He looked at her silently tor a
moment, knowing well enough that
ha was not speaking the truth, and
then be said
"Well, mar I come In?"
He read the denial In ber eyes, but
he said: '
, "There's nobody here only me."
"It is you I came to see."
. "Oh," she drew a quick breath.
."Well, come In please."
In hor mind she was wondering
Into which room she ought to ask
him; not to the drawing-room cer
tainly, tor the blinds were still un
drawn and she knew It would smell
stuffy; not to her uncle's study for
as yet she had not clerred up after
last night and there would be used
tumblers and general untidiness;
not to the dining-room for that too
would be In a muddle.
She said helplessly:
"Tbe kltoben's tbe best place If
you don't mind."
HE followed ber across the bait
"la your ui.ole out?"
"Yes; he's gone to London to
snake a will." There was a note of
Ironical amusement In her voice;
he knew well enough what the con
tents of that will would be. Every
thing would go tor the formation
of a Village Olub again, and nothing
for her.
There was a Are In the kitchen
and It was all fairly tidy.
Oeorgle drew forward Mrs. Love
lock's chair with the red cushion.
"I suppose I ougbt not to ask you
In bere," she said with a feeling of
helplessness. "But Mrs. Lovelock Is
111 and I've got It all to do and I'm
not very ,ood at It" Sbe did not ex
plain what "It" meant.
NIcholaa said "Wont you sit
down?"
"I'll sit on tbe table It you don't
mind."
Nicholas loaned against Mrs.
Lovelock's high-back chair.
RAILROAD LABOR
AGREEMENT HINT
WASIIINOTON, June 3. P A
prolonged conference late today of
railroad and labor representatives with
Joseph B. Eastman, the railroad co
ordinator, gave rite to reports that
an sgVeement had been reached In
the railroad labor dispute.
AFTER EVERY M

your eye like thatf" be asked again,
and again the red flags of distress
(lew to her cheeks.
"I told you. I knocked myself.
Wasn't It silly T" she was speaking
In quick, nervous tones. "It looks
worse than It Is. It looks an awful
sight I know."
"Does It hurt very macht"
"It aches . . . rather."
"Havs you done anything for It?"
Suddenly Nicholas held out bis
hand. "Come harel"
"No,"
"Why notr
"Because,'' then she covered ber
face with both bands and began to
sob.
Nicholas crossed the floor that di
vided them, and very gently took
her wrists in his grasp, drawing ber
hands down from ber face.
"Your uncle has been knocking
you about, Robin."
"No no. I fell. He didn't know
what he was doing; he'd had too
much to drink. Aj rule he's kind,
but last night," she stopped, the
tears running down ber face, ber
lips quivering.
T4TICH0LA8 said gently, "Why do
' you stay with him, Robin?"
She managed a broken laugh. "1
told you before beoause I've got
nowhere else to go, and besides, II
is my home, I suppose."
She gulped down a sob. "I'm stllj
to cry. I know yon bate to see peo
ple cry, but . . . well, everything
seems to have gone wrong since I
came home. And now Mrs. Love
lock's 111. They've taken her to the
hospital."
"Mrs. Lovelock?"
"The housekeeper. She had a bad
pain and Dr. Sudd said she must go
to the hospital, and he came lust
now and said they were going to
operate on ber; she's got appendici
tis, and unole Is furious. As If she
can help having appendicitis."
"Tell mt, Robin. This Mrs. tove
lock. Is she kind to you?"
"Kind?" Oeorgle considered the
point. "Well, you wouldn't call It
that exactly," she said at last, "but
she's someono to talk to, I miss ber
dreadfully though she only went
away last nigh'," she added with a
taint smile, which faded Into quick
apprehension as the front door bell
clanged again.
Georgia sllppod down from the
table.
"I'll go and see who It Is. ril shut
the door because 1 don't suppose
you want anyone to see you here. J
do wish you'd sit down."
Nicholas sat down In Mrs. Love
lock's chair. There was a sort ot
anger In bis heart that this oblld,
tor so Georgia seemed to him, should
be forced to lire In such surround
ings. He moved restlessly, shifting bis
lame leg a little. It one were not
so helpless, so tired ... the thought
broke.
The door behind him opened slow
ly and she came back.
Nicholas aalt rose, but she apoke,
checking him. ,
"No, don't got up. It's alright
Dudd ... It was Dr. Dudd. He's just
come from the hospital."
Her bewildered eyei were on his
face, but she seemed to be looking
beyond him at something she
dreaded.
"He said Mrs. Lovelock won't evor
come back . . . she's dead."
