Nelly asked sharply.
Georgia hesitated, then aha said
"Tea."
Nelly gare a stifled exclamation.
"Lord I bow did yon manage It!"
"I didn't; It Just happened."

They scrambled down, and sud

smell about It; a mixture of wash
ing and cooking, and paraffin, and

"Third floor," Nelly said laconic
ally. They climbed the narrow stair
case, and Nelly produced another
key and opened a room at the back
of the house.
A bed, a wardrobe, a small ohest

A strip of carpet by the bod, a
small gas stove, and a bunch of
Sowers on the round centre table.
"Well, alt down." Georgia took
the only chair, while Nelly busied
.herself making tea.
There waa a little silence, then
Nelly said halt defiantly.
"And now I suppose you won't
want to see me again."
Nelly laughed. "Nonsense! With
that facet".
"What's the matter with my

"JUOTHING'S the matter, but It's
' the sort men like. Tou're nol
exactly pretty but you're well, I
daresay Nicholas Boyd could ex
plain It better than I could. An

"Means what? He's married."
Nelly began to say somethlni
scornful, but the Innocent look In
Georgia's eyes stopped her.
"Can you get home all right by
yourself?" she asked, "I'll take you
to the corner and put you on a bus."
"I always go everywhere alone,"
Georgte said.
It was dark long before she got
home, and when she reached the
Boar's Hoad there were lights In
most ot the windows.
Georglo's steps slowed a little.
There waa a closed car outside
too, a car Georgle knew well for It
belonged to the doctor wbo some
times visited her nncla and told
him be must stop drinking unless
be wanted to die.

crossed the road and said good
evening to him.
I hope Mrs. Spears Is not 111?"
she asked.
Alt dhook his bead; be was a
thick-set. Ill-mannered fellow.
"No, It's Mr. Boyd," he said.
"Oh!" Georgia caught her breath.
"Very 111?" she enquired.
Alt shook his head again, his
eyos on bar flower-like face.

Georgle raised her head haugh
tily. "Thank you. I don't want to aea
him," she aald and went on up the
road.

"Tomorrow I'll go and see him.
she told herself determinedly. "1

or how angry, I'll go."
