Marking another year's Tery fins
progress in penmanship for the Med
ford schools, eighth grsde Rice cer
tificates were received last week by
44 per cent of all the aixth grade pu
pils in the Medford system. And with
the certificates came a letter com-
pllmentlng the Medford schools upon
the exceptional showing made during
tile past two or three years, describ
ing the Medford papers as outstand
ing among the thousands received
by the Rice Publishing company.
According to returns received by
the city school office here from the
Rice Publishing company, eighth
grade final certificates were earned
by 06 aixth gradera as follows:
Jackson school 11, Lincoln school
0, Roosevelt 22, Washington 34.
According to the Medford plan these
pupils are excused from penmanship
(unless they dee ire to take It) in the
seventh and eighth grades. They are,
however, tested each semester and
those who fall below a certain stand
ard must re-enter the penmanship
claas and work their way out again.
This plan makes It unnecessary Lo
teach so much penmanship in the
Junior high school, and has cut the
teaching cost for penmanship in that
school by about $900.
W. J. Rice, manager of the Rice
Publishing company In returning the
awards wrote Supt. E. H. Hedrlck as
follows:
'I have completed the grading
of your wonderful set of papers
and have issued all certificates
earned. These were carefully
packed and forwarded by express.
I believe you will receive all In
perfect order. In the package I
also included the papers from the
first, second and third grades,
which Mlas Wise requested.
"I am not in anyway exaggera
ting when I say that all of the '
thousands of papers that have
come to our office .in thla and
paat yeara, no school system haa
ever sent us as uniformly high
quality work throughout the sys
tem as you have sent for the past
two or three years." .
