t Just after sending In the last re
port, from Chicago, Don and 1 dis
covered that by going to the pub
licity bureau of the Century of Pro
gress snd showing our press cards.
It would be possible to get a press
psss to all exhibits and concessions.
Five or ten minutes after hearing
this we were st the puhlielty head
quarters with our credentials, and
the gentlemen who took care of ua
did so In a btg way. Besldea giving
us the press pssses. he gave us a
guide to show us around, furnish
ed Information and publicity mater
ial, and gave ua cigarettes.
Those cards worked wonders. The
first thing we did wss ride on a
roller coaster to see If they would
really work, and after ascertaining
that they really would, we started
in real earnest to "do" the fair. W
went on board the 8-49. sister ship
to the S-51, the submsrlne which
was aunk by the "City of Rome." a
few years ago In a collision. We
went on a real "show boat." We
enjoyed the Ripley "Believe It or
Not" concession, too.
Believe It or Not
When you get to the fair, see
that one. It costs, ordinarily forty
cents, and It Is one of the three
or four concessions that we thought
wss worth what they asked. About
forty of Ripley's living curiosities
sre there, and thoussnds of Inani
mate odds and ends. The mansgsr,
when he heard about our trip, was
very Interested. He eald he knew
Lee Bishop of KMED fame. I asked
him his nsme. he stsrted to give
me his csrd but wss called to ths
telephone, and didn't come back. I
went back Hhe next day. but he
wasn't in. Sorry. Lee I
Our real triumph wss going up
in the airplane, snd the observstlon
bsloon. We tried ths balloon flret.
but the ticket grabber wouldn't let
us In. So we went to the manager
and owner, and he said "sure," so
up we went. The thing went up
over a thoussnd feet, with Just Don.
the pilot, snd me ss passengers m
the box from which the "observing"
Is done. It afforded a swell view
of the whole exposition grounds.
That would have cost ua a dollar
ten apiece. Whew I
Bolstered by our success along
those lines, we tried the plane ride.
The advertising msnager ellowed us
to go up. A twenty mile ride along
the lske front, snd over the fair
grounds. The plane wss a Sikorsky
Amphlblsn. which taxied from a rsmp
into the water, out about a quarter
of a mile, turned, snd then csme
back snd took off right over the
fslr. I said that the plane "was"
a Sikorsky Amphlblsn, and that Is
correct. It crashed yesterday, kill
ing eight passengers and two pilots
in an attempt to land in a heavy
storm. One pontoon, was torn clesr
off ss the ship csme down on the
water. The pilot then took off again
and tried to make the regular air
port, but the wind stripped a wing
from the plane at a height of six

My mother, who used to live there
may know his folks. We had a
storm like the one that wrecked the
plane, while we were in Chicago. I
believe that X mentioned it before.
One minute bright and sunny the
next it was rslnlng. snd a sixty-five
mile sn hour wind. Lucky that we
have no such atorms on the coaat.
After leaving the plane, we saw
the "Psgesnt of Transportation,
which elso seemed worth the ad
mission. From saddle horses snd
covered wagons up to the slrplane
and giant locomotive. That show
runs for sn hour st a time.
The sky-rtde. as I mentioned last
week. Is not yet open, but the towers
are, and our passes allowed us to
spend quite a bit of time at ths
top, where the breeze la refreshing,
to ssy the least.
Tired of Wslklng
At last, growing tired of the fair,
we voted to continue our trip
around the world. You won't blame
us for being tired, when you know
that we walked in the hottest Juns
weather ever recorded In Chicago,

Before leaving Medford. Herb Grey,

to Mr. Joseph B. Hurd. of the Mst

Mr. Hurd graduated from Medford
high before going to Stanford. He
said thst he used to be a sub on
the foetbsl! team which stsrred Jess
Gentry. Hello, Jess, both for Mr.
Hurd snd myself. Mrs, Hurd still
lives In Medford, snd her son is
,planntng a visit to her thla summer.

It was hard, after our comfortable
stay In Chicago, to take to freight
trains sgsln, but It hsd to be done,
so we rode on a street car to the
New York Central yards, and after
waiting some hours, got a train sup
posedly leaving for Cleveland and
Buffalo. After a thirty mile ride,
the train stopped. There were about
thirty men In the same car we were
in, A railroad policeman, commonly
referred to as a "bull," looked In,
with a flssh-ltght, snd yelled snd
waved his gun. and generally con
veyed the Impression that he want
ed us to leave. In fact, now thnt
I recall, I believe he said so In very
flowery, or surphury, speech.
Falls In Swamp
The crowd stsmpeded out of the

In the mesn time, Don hsd dts-
appeared. I couldnt find him any
where. I wsded around looking for
him for some time, and flnslly came
to the conclusion that the bull hsd
eaten him. That theory would seem
much more plausible to you If you
had seen ths bull. Bo I stsrted
hollering for him. Just tn hope that
he wouldn't hsvs yet been digested
After a few mighty bellows on my
part, he flnslly answered, and by
golly It did sound like he wss deep
down Inside something, although It
immediately turned out that that
something wss ths coal bunker right
in front of the box car he had Just
been run out of.
He had been run out of the first
csr' and while the bull had been
yelling at me, he hsd climbed up
In the bunker snd hidden. But by
hiding from the minion of the lew,
he hsd slso hidden from me, and
in letting- me know where he wss,
he also let the bull know. There
was a great commotion, and finally
out came Don Into the swsmp, too.
Oh, well, the train wss the wrong
one, and wss going to St. Louis, not
Cleveland, snywsy.
Sees Nlsrnra Falls
When w got to Buffalo, we de.
elded to see Nlrgsra Falls. That wss
st three In the afternoon. By the
time we'd cleaned up. It was four.
It seeming more prudent to hitch
hike the twenty-five miles to the
falls, ws hsd to find a plsc to leave
our bed roll. While wenderlna- sbout
town In this pursuit, we passed a
police station. We entered, told our
storr. snd asked If we could lesve
It there.
The head man hemmed and haw
ed, and then mumbled that It was
"this wsy" he would like to ee
commodate us, and It would reslly
be no trouble, but that nothing wss
ssfe around there It would probab
ly be swiped, before we got buck I

It was around dark when we got
to Niagara, so we went out to Nla

olic school, snd they put us up for
the night. We hsd a good swim,
which helped a lot, and this morn
ing, Monday, June lath, we went
down to see the fells.
Coming out above the American
falls, we could look down Into the
seething white foam below, and there
wss a tiny stesmbost lashing about.
"The Msld of the Mist" waa painted

the way to do It. When we left the
boat, an Immigration officer, stopped

Has a Birthday
After that thrilling ride-, we wait
ed a while at the top of the ele
vator to get our breath, and then
went across the bridge to Goat Is
land, In the middle of the river at
the very edge of the falls. Here was
the trip through the Cave of the
Winds. Expense being nothing In,
our young lives (excuse me sgaln,
but by the way, I had my twenty
first blrthdsy the other day the
aecond In my life without a birth
day cake.) As I started to ssy, ex
pense being nothing In our young
Uvea, we had to go on that trip,
too. At this plsce we hsd to change
sll our clothing, and put on rubber
suits. The slicker Jackets, yellow
this time lnstesd of black, were
hooded, and the ahoee were made
of hemp to prevent allpplng. Down
In another elevator, and out on the
race of the cliff between the two
falls. A narrow wooden bridge led
down onto the rocks thst have
worn loose snd fsllen In psst sges.
The tiny bridge Is rebuilt every year,
and the Ice carrlea It away the next
winter. The bridge leada over the
rocks and through the sprsy right
psst ths foot of Bridal Veil falls,
snd then Into the storm. Thst part
of the cat-walk Is called the Hurri
cane Deck, snd deserves the nime.
The wind whips snd drives greet tor
rents of cold water upon you, nnd
you are soon soaked through. A sign
looming through the epray warns you
to "bewsre of pick-pockets." Then
up a flight of water-swept stairs to
the Csve of the Winds. Wster thun
dering down on both sides, and be
ing blown in sll directions sbou,
you. It wss a real inrtll. Then beck
through mors guata of water to the
elevator, and back to the dressing
rooms. After dressing, you sign the
register that has been kept alnce

open air again you feel as thovigh
you hsd Just been In a nice cool
swimming pool.
As soon as we emerged, It being
lata afternoon, we looked up the
biggest newspaper In town, the Qss
etle. and they 1st us um the tvrl
writer on which this Is being writ
ten. The town, by the wsy, hss over
seventy-five thoussnd Inhabitants.
