STATES 1ST AID
IN RELIEF LOAD
WASHINGTON. June 1. IPi In
a talk to state relief administrators
today President Roosevelt warned
that states and local communities
must carry on their "fair share" of
aid.
The president promised the coor
dination of relief and public works in
all communities but gave notice that
the $3,300,000,000 program would not
be used to build "a lot of useless pro
jects disguised as relief."
' He suggested a setup in each state
of a commission of five or six citi
zens to administer relief "In a business-like
way and entirely apart from
partisan politics."

ical profession. Dr. Sweeney was the

medical science which is one of the
oldest professions in the world. He

who stated this oath was still accept
ed by the medical profession as their
code of ethics.
Dr. Holt gave an interesting talk
on the vast amount of research car
ried on by the medical profession to
Improve health conditions and telling
why physicians were slow to adopt
new and untried ideas. The history
of vaccination which was Instituted
In 1796 by Jaynor and the work in
bacteriology by Pasteur were given as
example of exhaustive research. Dr.
Holt also told of the effective work
of the Reed commission in control
ling malaria and Yellow Fever which
made possible the completion of the
Panama canal after it seemed doom
ed to failure. Next week an open
forum on medical science will be
conducted by Doctors Sweeney and
Holt and all Rotarians are urged to
be present.

drove openly through the street,
where she might be seen by the kid

where Attorney Geddes was waiting.
He dressed in her clothing and re
turned downtown after dark.
The state policemen slipped Into
the car on a side street, keeping out
of sight In the bottom of the car,
and drove to the appointed epot,
where Attorneys Hallmark and Wlm
berly, ex-Shertff V. T. Jackson and
Frank Hills, local garageman had pre
viously hlc den themselves.
Shortly after the arrival of Geddes
and Officer Hoxle, Haley and Park
drove by, parking their car about 100
feet away. Haley, officer Hoxle re.
ports, then returned on foot. An
'envelope stuffed with paper was hand
ed him after a brief conversation,
whereupon the officer came out of his
hiding place and ordered Haley to
put up his hands. Instead of obeying
the command, Haley started to run
and was struck by one of four shots
fired at him. He died about 18 min
utes after he was wounded.
Led to House.
Park Immediately surrendered, and
led officers to the Wlnningham home
where the kidnaped attorney was res
cued. Compton states that he was not
mistreated in any way after the brief
struggle when he first arrived. He
had carefully worked out leads for
officers to follow, sending Douglas
Wlnningham to the cigar store for
cigars, which were purchased In the
same number as usually ordered by
the attorney. Bands and wrappers
from the cigars were tossed out of
the window at the home to aid offi
cers In locating the place In event of
a search. The attorney reports that
.he was given food, and was not mis
treated In any way, and that he spent
the six hours In the hands of the kid
napers by helping Miss Wlnningham
with a fiction story she was writing.

The defense counsel also flayed the

ney George A. Codding, and said, "I

ed up evidence.'
Sound Effects Vsed
At one stage of his talk, En right
endeavored to make a noise like a
bull and compared It to Moody's bril
liant opening address. He bellowed
three times in Imitation of a bull.
He further declared La Dleu was be
ing "framed because of his layalty
to Banks."
Enrlght praised Jean Conners, and
referred to the defendant 'as good
cltlsens."
He closed with a plea for the Jury to
remember the three children of La1-
Dleu," and that "Fehl and Schermer
horn are elected, and they (the state)
are trying to upset the will of the
people."
Attorney Moody in reply ssld, "on
the face of returns Fehl and Scher
merhorn were elected, but the will of
the people, as expressed through the
court, to find out, was thwarted, by
the ballot thefts."
"When Enrlght calls the state wit
nesses 'ex-convicts and J all -birds, he
Is as near the truth, as he will ever
get," Attorney Moody declared. He
then read the names of 20 witnesses
of the state, not In anyway connected
with the vot stealing, and asked, If
"they were Jail-birds."
How About Co. Officials
"Defense counsel has attacked the
Sexton brothers for telling of their
crime. How about the old men who
put them up to it? How about the
trusted county officials, who connived
with them?" the state's attorney ask
ed. "The defense does not seem to be
satisfied with the state's witnesses,
he added.
Attorney Moody then reviewed the
state's evidence, and closed with the
words :
"This county was named ofter An
drew Jackson "Old Hickory." It la
the duty of this Jury, to act as "Old
Hickory" would have done, when law
and order were in the balance, and
restore the good name of Jackson
county, to Its rightful place in the
eyes of the "state of Oregon."
