OPENING SPEEDS
BEND, Ore., June 13 (AP) Aided
by wum weather which In the past
two days has reduced the depth of
snow as much as two feet In some
places, the state highway department
rotary plow used In opening the Mc
Kenzle Pass, was boring its way slow
ly toward Cascade summit today and
by tomorrow probably will start Its
most formidable attack, that of ex
cavating a trench through snow in
the big cut.
In the cut, at the east approach to
the summit lava fields, the depth of
snow has been reduced by hot weather
from 19 to 16 feet in the past week,
but the pack remaining la more like
a glacier than a drift.

The coast guard station here re
ported today that the dirigible Ma
con, flying in this vicinity, reported
by wireless that its rudder had been
disabled and It was heading toward
Sault 8te. Marie, Mlcb.
At 3:10 p. m. coast guard officials
reported, the Macon sent out another
wireless message which they were un
able to desclpher. Members of the
coast guard said the huge dirigible
passed over here and disappeared to
the north. In the face of a 35-mile
headwind.
The dirigible, they said, was near
the Lake Michigan shore-line when
sighted.
