Fined $5 Leslie E. Croucher was
fined $8 In Justice of the Peace W.
R. Coleman's court Saturday, on a
charge of operating a motor vehicle
without a muffler. The fine was sua-,
pended. Croucher was arrested Friday ,
evening by state police on the high
way north of Medford.

cher of Portland, formerly pastor of
the Free Methodist church In Med
ford. left on the Shasta Saturday for
Portland, having visited In Ashland,
and also attended the morning ses
sion of the Young People's Missionary
society's convention here;
Had Coat Stolen Joe Sllva of Oak
land, Calif., reported to city police
Friday evening that en route here
from the south, he picked up a man
aDd woman hitch-hiker at Redding,
and about two hours after letting
them out of his automobile In Med
ford, he discovered a leather coat
had been stolen.
Loses Pin Doris Delamarter of
Newburg, Ore., is in Medford attend
ing the Young People's Missionary
convention of the Free Methodist
church, and yesterday reported at
the Mall Tribune that she had lost a
Silver W. C. T. U. pin which she had
won. Anyone finding the pin, Is re
quested to turn It over to the pastor
of Free Methodist chureh.

ford are reminded thla week that
the local Y. W. C. A. acts as an em
ployment agency for women and are
advised to call 981-L when wishing
to register for work or to obtain some
one to work. This service la offered
by the board members, who are anx

Avoid "Gin" Law Everett York Cor
kln, 3d, of Medford. and Hazel Marie
Schmllt, 33, of Grants Pass, were the
second couple to avoid the "gin mar
riage" barrier by a few hours. Miss
Schmidt Is well known in this city,
her father Fred Schmidt having own
ed Fred's Auto Park on the Pacific
highway, south for some time. Cor-
kin gave his occupation as that of
orchardist and his flencee a clerk.
He was born in Hillsboro, N. D., while
Miss Schmidt is a native of Grants
Pass. It Is the second marriage for him
and the first for her. Grants Pass

CAMP FOR JOBLESS

BEAR MOUNTAIN. N, Y., June 10
(AP) The first camp for unem
ployed women, known as Camp Tera
and suggested by Mrs. Franklin D,
Roosevelt and Secretary of Labor
Perkins, opened today with 17 wo
men, ranging in age from 18 to 30,
arriving from New York.
For the first week, rest will be
the order for the Jobless women.
Each Wednesday and Saturday, a
new contingent will arrive until the
camp's capacity of 200 Is filled.
DEATH TAKES ONE
HARTFORD, Conn., June 10. (AP)
Winchell Smith. 63, who as one of
the creators of "Lightnin " and
"Brewster's Millions" was a leading
American playwright, died thla after
noon at his home, Mill Streams,
Farmlngton.
His death came less than a year
after that of ,hls wife, Grace Spencer
Smith, who worked with the play
wright on many of his dramas.

modity departments today, though
stocks came through ripples of week
end profit taking with a small aver
age net advance.

erans State Aid commission, and all
properties which the commission has
repossessed and acquired title to will
be under his direct charge, both as
to sale and rental for the state.
The commission has just been com
pleted reappraising all of Its state
owned property and .has fixed new
sales prices and Is ready now to
enter upon an aggressive sales cam
paign in order that these properties
can again be placed back upon the
tax rolls of the county and state.
In Jackson county the commission
has Invested 50,765.96 in 19 city
residences and four farms. Through
out the state there are 1058 indi
vidual parcels owned by the state aid
commission, of which 703 are city
residences and 355 are farms. In
these the commission has invested
$3,417,379.94.

Billy Woods and Clifford Dopson,
who escaped with nine other convicts
from the Kansas penitentiary Me
morial day, were captured by two U.
S. customs officers today while flee
ing toward tne Mexican border.
The fugitives were taken prisoner
near Junction, Tex., 150 miles from
the Rio Grande, by Customs Officers
J. A. Tllley and W. E. Kllborn.
Two women and a baby were with
the convicts, who were driving a car
stolen In Missouri.
ROBBERS LEAVE IN
EU
REEDSPORT, Ore., June 10. (AP)
Prank Timberlake, 70, was found
unconscious at his home today by
Charles Wilbur. When Timberlalie
failed to answer his knocks, Wilbur
broke down the door and found the
Injured man. Police said Timberlake
recovered sufficiently to say he had
been assailed by robbers, who es
caped with an unnamed amount of
money, a diamond ring and a watch.
Timberlake was taken to a North
Bend hospital for treatment.

warfare as the cause of the holocaust.
John E. Guldettl Bergen county
proescutor'a detective, announced
clues of Incendiarism had been found
in the wrecked plant of the Atlantlo
Pyroxlln Waste company's plant, and
told of being informed of threats of
reprisal made against the operator of
the piant by business rivals.
Alex Scheineit, the operator of the
business, was being held on chargsa
of technical manslaughter.
Gutdettl's announcement was fol
lowed by orders for the arrest of two
Elizabeth, N. J., men as material wit
nesses of the disaster. The names
of the men sought were not dis
closed. Gulaettl said he had learned that
Scheineit had Deen warn.' recently
by business rivals that a "bitter
fight" was In the offing to determine
which would stay In business the
longest.
