club will hold a card party Thursday
evening, June 1, It was announced to
day. It will be at the K. P. hall and
bridge and 500 will be played with
the Pythian staff acting as hostesses.

Return Whistle The fire depart
ment will start blowing a return
whistle at the close of each fire fight
ing expedition, it was announced to
day, in order that water users, ask
ed, to shut off the water during a

ciation of the effort made by the
people to turn the water off at the
announcement of a fire, Chief Roy El

Owens In Portland Well, well, Jas.
H. Owens has gone back to the old
home place. Last time he was here he
announced that he had been playing
hookey, but this time he wants the
. world to know that he is keeping
house in the old home at Pure Water,
one of the show places of Jackson
county. When Mr. Owen was here
few weeks ago he registered from
Medford. and this caused his friends
to' get after him. So yesterday when
he arrived at the Hotel Portland to
attend the gathering of the Western
Plni association, Jim wrote the rlg'at
address in a bold hand. He is in the
lumber business down south. Mrs.
Owen accompanied him to this cit.

Garden Club to Meet The Med
ford Garden club will hold its regu
lar monthly meeting Thursday eve
ning, June 1, at 7:35 o'clock in the
court house auditorium. Plana for
the flower show next week will te
discussed and other matters of in
terest to all flower lovers.

The average expenditure per family
per month the committee estimated
at 90.25, using the sum on a gradua
ted scale. Between 47.00 and $16 was
received by each family, depending
upon the number of persons Includ
ed.
Through the relief program the
government workers have stressed
many times, and repeated again to
day that, "the federal government is
only aiding the man a little towaru
the solution of his problem. In that
only a limited amount of funds are
available, these must be divided
among the whole number of people
needing aid."
All reciplenta, with the exception
of those mentally and physically un
fit, are required, and have been, to
work for what they receive. The
county gets labor In return for all
money released through this relief
channel.
All records have not been turned 'n
and checked for the month of May,
which ends today, but it Is bellevfd
that the number of caes total ap
proximately 1700 families and 300
single persons, with expenditures ex
ceeding. slightly, the $17,000 budget.
TAKES C.C.C. DUTY
Captsln William H. Sadler, quarter,
master, United States army, has re
ported lor duty at the headquarters
of the Medford district Civilian Con
servation Corps, It was announced
here today.
He has been placed in charge of
the O. C. C. warehouse and has been
appointed procurement officer. Cap
tain Sadler comes here after a years
duty ae a student at the Command
and General Staff school at Fort
Leavenworth, Kansas.
Orders have been Issued for the
rear cadres for camps P-41 at Apple
gate, F-45 at Agness and P-48 at
Cliff Springs, to proceed from Van
couver Barracks, Washington, to their
respective camps at once, It was also
announced at headquarters nere to
day.
The men will be arriving tomor
row or Friday. It is expected that
the local quota of 69 men will be
enrolled In the near future and sent
to the Applegate camp.
Among other new arrivals at the
local Conservation Corps headquarters
are Lieut. Lewis T. Ross, executive
officer, and Lieut. George A. A. Jones,
assistant executive, who will direct
publlcit .
