Champ Stays On Canvas
After Third Knockdown
Crowd Stunned by Sudden
Climax Promoters Lose
By BRIAN BELL
Associated Press Staff Writer
LOS ANGELES, May 30 (AP) iLesa
than three minute after he went
Into the ring to box for the welter
weight title, Jimmy McLarnln turn
ed hi first cartwheel a champion.
The smiling Irishman from Van
couver knocked out Young Corbett III
in the first round last night and im
mediately went Into his handspring
A crowd of approximately 30,000
amazed men and women sat In Wrig,
ley Field, the Los Angeles baseba'l
park, and saw the challenger batter
the champion with two right and
three lefts, all perfect hits. Just be-
for the end of the round. The bout
lasted only two minutes and 37
second.
Puzzled At First
Corbett' deceptive southpaw sty'e
puzzled his opponent t the outset
and Jimmy had done notning to pave
the way for his devastating attack
when It came.
Suddenly a terrific McLarnln right
hand landed flush on corbett jaw.
The champion went down. He was
not badly hurt and Intently followed
the count 'as Referee George Blake
lifted and lowered his hand. At nine,
be shook hi head and leaped to hie
feet.
From a neutral corner, his srmtle
replaced by a grim look of determin
ation, sped MoLarnln. A the title-
holder lifted his hands, a looping
left ellpoed through, and as he stag
gered, two more left hook followed
with lightning-like rapiaity. uoroe
went down again and MoLarnln again
trotted to a corner.
Out On Feet
This time the Fresno lad did not
follow., the count but Instinctively
rose to his feet at eight. He w,is
dazed and almost out. As McLarnln
charged In, the champion was half
turned and a right sent him sprawling
through the ropes, half out of the
ring. There wo no count. None was
needed. Everybody knew the bout
was over. Blake pushed MoLarnln
aside, and with the same motion of
hi hand lifted his glove proclaiming
a new champion.
The fight made several records. It
was the first time Corbett had been
knocked out and only hi third de
feat In 76 bout. It was also Mc
Larnln' first victory over a southpaw.
He had fought but one Lou Broull
lard and lost the decision to him
last year.
Title Soon Lost
Corbett had held the championship
only three month and a week, win-,

'Iron Man 'Dan O'Leary
Bows to Toll of Years
LOS ANGELES. May 80. (AP) A
human machine who knew no fa
tigue, Dan O'Leary lay dead today
under the eye of a physician who
marvelled for years at Its endurance.
Walker extraordinary, Dan OLeary
expected to live to the age of 120
years, but dlaease and natural toll of
age struck him down yesterday in a
Los Angeles hotel where he was
spending the winter, still short of 93
years.
Death waa due to hardening of trie
arteries. He scorned steady attention
of a doctor. In spite of a developing
tumor on hta hip, but ten days ago
he admitted that his finely coordi
nated mxiaclea perhaps needed the
c&re of a physician. S he called In
ci&co In flan Francisco on Washing
ton birthday.
If boxing history repeat ltseif,
smiling Jimmy' will find It waa easier
to win the belt than to keep It. THe
last five monarch of the division
have reigned only briefly. Young
Jack Thompson, Tommy Freeman,
Lou Broulllard and Jackie Fields were
barely seated on the throne when they
were shoved oir.
After the championship had chang
ed hands, Corbett revealed that the
last eventa of the evening were only
blur,
I don't know what happened," he
said. "I don't know how he hit me,
or what I did after that."
Corbet t's guarantee was $35,000
while MoLarnln fought for 22 per
cent of the receipt.
The box of flee count ahowed only
$39,400 so McLarnln won the title
but no money. The promoters paid
heavily to see the sensational bout.
