Forty-two of the fastest race cars in
America today were groomed for the
start of the SOO-mlle speedway claa
sic here tomorrow, but another, the
Ill-fated machine which roared over
the wall at a turn yesterday, waa a
burned wreck, and the two men who
rode It were dead.
Victims of the first fatal accident
the treacherous 2'i-rolle brick
course this year, the dead were Wil
liam Denver of Audobon, Pa., driver.
and Bob Hurst. Indlnnnpolls. riding
mechanic. They were tossed clear
when their car, the same one in
which Al Aspen of Philadelphia es
caped serious injury after a 1000-foot
skid a week ago, tore through the
outer retaining wall, struck a tree
and burst into flames.
Quick action by onlookers saved
them from death in the fire, but
Denver died of a broken neck and
Hurst of a skull fracture. Denver, 32
years old. was preparing to qualify
the car for a starting position, and
was making a practice run at 10B
miles per hour when the accident
occurred. Hurst was 31. Both men
were married.
Forty-four drivers had, bettered the
required 100 miles per hour for 26
miles when rain halted the time trials
48 minutes before sundown yester
day. The starting field Is limited to
42.
The two racers who had the slowest
qualifying averages Merrill "Dock"
Williams of Franklin. Ind., 104.BD8
miles per hour, and, Sam Palmer of
Los Angelee. 105.098 thus were auto
matically eliminated.
Speedway officials announced the
race will not be broadcast.

Young Corbett. the third (born Gior
dano), goes out tonight to defend his
welterweight boxing title, against hard
punching Jimmy MoLarnln. less than
100 days after he won the champion
ship from Jackie Fields. Corbett,
whose home is in Fresno, Calif., cap
tured the belt from Flelda on Wash
Ington's birthday in the San Fran
Cisco baseball park.
Tonight's battle will also be In i
ball park. Wrlgley field, and If all
the customers come there will he
room for approximately 60,000.
A majority of the experts have lined
up tn the Corbett camp and the
champion ruled the favorite from
odds of two to one to ten to eight.

trapshootera Journeyed to Klamath

reglatered shoot staged by the Klam
ath Oun club. Perfect weather con
ditions prevailed and the tournament
waa run off tn excellent style. Med
ford gunners were enthusiastic over
the reception and entertainment and
many declared It the most enjoyable
shoot attended In quite eome time.
Two Klamath gtinncra took hlirh
honora In the 16-yard event at 100
targets. N. T. Stoddard and E. Hard
enback each turned In scores of 89.
Medford shootera were right behind,

O. Mendenhall and Sid Newton each

port, of Medford, and J. H. Martin of
Klamath Pall, all broke 97 out of th
100. Cheater Wood of Prospect took:

up a long run of 103. This Is the sec
ond long run of 100 for Sid, tha
first one having been made about a
year ago over the Medford traps.
Another feature of the Klamath
shoot was the fine exhibition of
doubles shooting by J. H. Martin and
E. N. Hardenbrook of that city. Mar
tin won the race, which waa at 19
pair, by a single target, losing the
last one. Martin's score was 23 to
Hnrdenbrook'a 22.
