SANTA MONICA, Cal. (A) Be
tween them. Santa Monica and Berk
eley have developed some of the great
est tennis plsyers In annals of Amer
ican netdom.
Berkeley produced Mra. Helen Wills
Moody and Miss Helen Jacobs aa Us
foremost exponents of the net game.
while thta city haa sent such stars
are Mav Sutton Bundy. Johnny Doeg.
Tom Bundy and Jay Cohn to the
tennis wars.
Now these two California dtlea
have cooperated in producing a
young woman who bids fair to follow
in the footsteps of her Illustrious
predecessors.
She Is Oracyn Wheeler, lithe 18-year-old
University of California at
Los Angelea co-ed, who haa rapidly
forged to the front In the past two
years as a Junior and who, on Janu
ary 1. entered women's oompetltloa.
Miss Wheeler was born in Berk
eley in 1914. but moved here with her
parents while very young and "grew
up" on Santa Monica's tennis courts.
More Than 50 Titles.
Although she competed in her first
tournament in 1929, ahe has won
more than 60 titles. Including three
natldnal championships, several Ca
nadian crowns and a host of coast,
state and city tournaments.
Her first major victory was In the
1930 Pacific Coast girls' singles
championship. Next year ahe won.
among others, the southern Cali
fornia, Pacific Southwest. Southern
California Junior girls' singles and
the national hardcourt girls' doubles
crown with Katherlne Wood of Los
Angeles.
Continuing her sensational play,
the tall high school "comet" sosred
to new heights last year when ahe
captured 29 champlonahtps In vsrl-
ous parte of the United States and
Canada.
The high spot of her Northwestern
campaign was the Waahlngton state
tournament. In which she won five
championships girls' singles and
doubles, women's singles and doubles
and mixed doublea.
Plays Spectacular Game.
After a brief rest she entrained tor
Philadelphia, where ahe nabbed the
Eastern grass court girls' singles
throne and the national girls' doubles
championship with Katherlne Wln
throp. Her game Is spectscular. No soft
lobs for her. From 1 atart to finish
she takes chances with sizzling drives
to the corners, placements and whiz
zing shots that leave her opponents
bewildered.
Although very slender, she' Is wiry
and as tireless aa a oow pony. Hers
Is a perfect temperament. Nothing
ruffles her. whether an Impolite gal
