FOR LOCAL IN
Frisbie Fells Foe After
Scheduled Fight Over
Anderson Sonnenbergs
. Italian in General Melee
"Once wrestler, always a wrestler,"
mi proved again last night when Ray
FrlJble. Medford fireman and Pete
Bekastro. Weed Italian, donned box
ing paraphernalia to see which was
the better man In the art of fltla
euffa Belcastro laid the local giant
out for the count 1c the final sec
onds of the first frame of their sched
uled 10-round main event, but not
before Friable had felled him three
times with powerful punches to the
bead.
The affair was one of the wildest
melees ever seen In a Medford ring
and wound up with a surge of spec
tators lntoarena where Belcastro was
dancing about, trying to get past Iter
ere Jack McCarthy, apparently for
the purpose of pinning his fallen foe's
shoulders to the mat In true grap
pllng style.
One of the first to climb througi
the ropes was Harold ("Swede") An
derson, former Medford high school
and Oregon university football sta:
Belcastro jumped at Anderson and
knocked him down. Belcastro was
nulled off and the gridiron hero
backed off and crumpled the Italian
on the canvas with a perfect Bon
nenberg. At that stage of the fracas
a dozen or more fans had entered the
ring in an atempt to -oorral the pug
nacious Pa, while Friable regained
his feet from listening to the birdies
' sing, and sdcanved on Belcastro. and
In a general mlxup hooked one to
the Jaw which felled the belligerent
one like a polled ox. The Armory
was In an uproar throughout the
short-lived festivities and a veritable
bedlam broke loose when Prists was
felled.
Both men used combination wres
tling and boxing tactics In their of
fensive, grabbing their opponent
around the neck with one arm and
pumping punches to the head with
the other hand.
A seml-wlndup which had all tho
mlrth-provoklrur qualities, of a Char
lie Ohaplln picture and the vicious
ness of a real battle, whetted the
fan' appetite for the final bout.
Spider "Bones" MoElroy, a spendllng
Pelican City lad, gained the decision
over Tony Ortls after six rounds of
wild flailing. Ortls. much ' shorter
than his opponent, elected at the
outset to fight In olose and for the
first four rounds the boys flailed
away in a partial clinch. The "Spi
der'' was as hard to hit as a shadow
and despite the apparent lack of a
punch, had Tony In a bad way In the
final frame.
Roy Harris, Phoenix pride, landed
one of his haymakers on Neldo Gtn
notti, Pelican City boy, In the first
round, which took much of the steam
from the vUltlng battler, and pro
ceeded to give his opponent a lacing
In the following frames which earned
the nod.
Emerson Babb, Medford, and Red
Melhom of Klamath Falls, went four
rounds to a draw In the ourtaln-,
raiser, both boys swlging lusty round
house blows, few of which found their
mark.
It was announced from the ring
that Jack McCarthy. Medford llght
heavywelght, would meet Battling
Beno of Pelican City on the next
rare. Frankle Monroe, lightweight,
Issued a challenge from the ring,
which was promptly accepted by
Herb White, for a later date. Local

CHILLED BAITERS
UNABLE TO SOLVE
(By the Associated Press.)
Regsrdless of th quite logical ex
planation offered by Will Harrldge,
American league president, that the
weather Is to blame or all this re
msrkable early-season pitching this
spring, the fact remains that the
slab departments of the two major
leagues are doing outstanding work
against the chilled betters.
The latest additions to the list of
Aprl. heroes sre LeRoy Psrmelee of
the New York Giants, and Oral Hilda
brand with the Cleveland Indians,
each barely missing the no-hlt hall
of fame. Parmelee turned back the
slugging Phillies, 3 to 1. The only
hit off Parmelee was a smash by
Mickey Plnn In ths third Inning. It
went for a double wlien Johnny Ver
ges found It too hot to hold.
Hlldabrand came J'let sbout as close
to a no-hlt feat but lost It when Are
Schnreln cracked out a snappy sin
gle. The Indians, however, had little
trouble blanking the St. Louis Browns
3 to 0.
In support of the Harrldge theory
that cold, damp weather la respon
sible for such flinging feats, both
theio games, along with a four-hit
Job by Owen Carroll of Brooklyn,
?b led to a 8-1 triumph over the
Boston Braves, and a 8-hlt game by
Silas Johnson of Cincinnati In beat
ing St. Louis, 3-1, uame on a day
when chilly weather reigned over ma
jor league territory.
The Chicago-Pittsburgh National
leagu egame and the New York-Philadelphia
contest In the American
were postponed because of cold,' snd
Washington and the Blston Red Sox
were rained out. .
In the remaining game on the pro
gram the Detroit Tigers went 11 In
nings to give the Chicago White Sox
their fourth defeat of the season, 8
to 4.
Kelly and Bowman were high
bowlers In the Elks' doubles tourna
ment last evening, garnering a total
of 1133 pins. Kelly annexed a total
of 820 for best Individual score of
the match. Sanderson and White
chalked up high score for single game
with 384 in the final set-to.
On Tuesday night Eads and Gilbert
were In rare form, toppling 419 pins
for high single gsme and 1187 for
high three games. Eads achieved In
