CALYX SPRAY TO
)L
S
The time to apply the ealya epray
gn epp'.e tree for the control ot
OodllnR moth will eoon be at hand.
' 'sVooordlng to L. P. Wilcox, county
gent, and Ij. O. Centner of the
Southern Oregon Experiment Station,
this sprsy should be applied when
gbout 85 per cent of the flower petals
fcave fallen. -
The object of the calyx epray l
to fill the calyx cups with poison
before they cloee. o that worms
which may later attempt to enter
the apple through the calyx or blos
som end will be killed. .
In a week or ten days, the trees
wtll be resdy for this spray, as they
ewe now In full bloom. Spraying
s&ould be done promptly, since the
ealyx may close within week after
the petsls fall. Careless spraying or
waiting too long before applying me
apray will result in much more
wormy fruit at harvest time.
In pear orchards where lesf and
fruit eating Insects such as saw fly
hrvse. green fruit worms and canker
worms are present, it la advisable to
epray the treea when the young fruits
are well formed and about the sin
of a pea.
Powdered arsenate of lead at the
ate of three pounds to one hundred
gallons of water should be used m
the above sprays.

Half the New, York powers came
running also. They were not trying
to kill the plan so much as to find
out what was happening. Their
friendly officials In the administra
tion whispered that tihey need not
rocry Mr. Roosevelt was only fool-
jfeig the Inflationist in congress.
That was largely true. The presl- j
$ent himself told at least two of his !
QBflocl&tea confidentially he Intended
to use but one feature of the plan,
yhat was the first one, his own, the
provision for three billion In cur-
. ftvncy to offset the coming three bil
lion dollar public works bond Issue.
1 The gold revaluation and silver
bems were Just tossed In to get a
majority In congress. The whole thlng

rt or none of It as he choae,
Tne Republicans and the banker
bad heard that story before. They
Old not question the presidents sin- i
parity. They were skeptical that if he ,
price got the authority Tie would use
lb, not now perhaps but a few months
lience. Mr. Hoover once had an Idea
he would not use the price stabilisa
tion features of the farm bill but ho
Hid.
The bankers bowed out more or
less gracefully. The Republicans de
cided to make a record of opposition
smyway. something which could be
pointed to In the next election If the
thing did not work. '
That was good strategy. It per
formed the patrlotlo duty of letting
the president have .bis way. It also
safeguarded any political advantage
which might accrue from failure ot
fee plan. .

'Leaders Depart.
The leaders of the Farmers' Na
tional Committee for Action, who
have organized three units In the
state, declared that they did not wish
to become Involved In political strife
or a one-man revolution and put on
their coats and departed.
- Throughout the meeting Mrs.
Pomeroy expressed hearty approval of
the plans outlined by the speakers
with repeated applause. When Mr.
Pomeroy, seated beside her, failed to
raise his hand in approval of organi
zation of a unit here she raised It
for him.
Members of the audience of less
than 60, wishing to organize a unit,
were Invited to come forward follow
ing the addresses. It was In the
group session, which followed, accord
ing to the out of town speakers, that
Mrs. Pomeroy, offered her suggestion,
which was emphatically refused.
Want Classleis Society.
The speakers last night were Intro
duced by Mr. Ware and made a stir
ring appeal for organization of dirt
farmer to bring about a "clasaleee
society, a workers' and farmers gov
ernment." Dale, In his ad drew,
stated that the primary interest of
the committee for action is to keep
the American farmer on the farm
and out of the breadlines. He de
scribed the Farmers' National Relief
conference, the strikes of mlddle-weat
farmers and distributed extensive
literature, which he declared should
be read by all "class . conscious
farmers." He Informed his audience
that ex-President Hoover had done
nothing to aid the dirt farmer and
that President Roosevelt had "abso
lutely ignored" his organization's de
mands. -
Correll, although stating .that he
did not wish to .lead an attack on
any farm organization, condemned
the Grange for permitting In its
membership persona who do not make
their living farming.
Tells Experiences.
"When farmers will keep from their
membership persons not strictly dirt
farmers, we need have no fears," he
declared. "We're out to organize com
mittees of action. The Grange ad
mits to membership anyone inter
ested in agriculture, -whatever ' that
interest may be. Our1! Is a dirt
farmers' unit." i
He then told of experiences In the
farming district out from Hood River,
where the Farmers' National Commit
tee for action was refused use of the
Odell Grange ball. A meeting was
later granted In a building belonging
to a colony of Finnish people, he
stated, who have arranged for a maas
meeting In the near future In a Hood
River theater,
, A collection was taken up to aid
continuance of the speakers on their
tour and numerous pamphlets sold
at last night's meeting.
A elmllar gathering will be held
In Grants Pass tonight, the speakers
announced.
