Speaking before the Daughter ol
American Revolution, who for years
baa teen adopting resolution! calling
for armies and navlee for national ad
xenee, Amelia Earhart eald today no
organization should advocate arma
ments unless the members were will
ing to bear arms themselves.
The avlatrlx said equaUty with men
was essential in everything and
aerteo women should be drafted In
event of war.
Mm Earhart said at present there
are about 800 licensed women pilots
compared to 18,000 men. exclusive or
armv and navy.
She then announced she would
"touch on a point which this organt
ration and myself do not see eye to
eye.''
"You are very much Interested In
the nation's defense through tne
army id navy," she said. "I feel that
Industrial development Is Just as im
portant, and feel that a great num.
ber of ' Industrial pilots Is Just as
potent security as we have In a large
armv and navy."
She retold humorously the story of
her historlo solo flight across the At-
lantlo eleven months ago.
She paid high compliment to Mrs
Franklin D. Roosevelt, who flew with
her last night to Baltimore and back
"Tie example set by the first lady
of tne land has done more to advance
aviation, among women, 1 think, than
any other factor," she said.

DOGS AND CATS
OFTEN VICTIMS
At least two dogs, cats or other
animals' every minute are victims of
auto drivers, according to Mrs. H.
D. McCaskey, president of the Jack
son County Humane society. A con
servative estimate has placed the
number at well over a million a year,
which means at least two every min
ute for each 34 hours a day and 806
days a year.
"We are going to make every effort
not only during this 'Be Kind to
Animals Anniversary.' but at all
times In the future, to Impress upon
automobile drivers that they must
exert more care In avoiding mishaps
to animals while driving," said the
head of the local society.
"This wholesale slaughter of ani
mals must be stopped If we have to
prosecute all offenders. Courts have
held that animals are entitled to the
same consideration along the roads
as are human beings and we are de
termined to see that they get It.
"Sftnte of these mishaps are,- of
course, unavoidable. A dog or cat
may at any time step In front of
speeding car and suffer Injury or
death. We ask In these canes that
they be reported Immediately to the
local society so that proper disposal
may be made of the killed or maimed
animal.
"It la the hit-and-run driver we
are anxious to bring to Justice. There
are two typea of these. There Is lit
tle to choose between them. There
Is no human more despicable than
the driver who will deliberately run
down a frightened dog, cat or chicken
scampering across the road, and then
turn In glee to see the extent of the
damage he has caused.
"We are asking, not only this week,
but throughout the year, that re
ports of Injured animals be made
promptly to the headquarters of our
society. We would like the license
number of the car that caused the
accident, and the name and address
of the party reporting the accident
It Is the duty of everyone to co-operate
In this way."

probably will straighten the matter
out without a public brawl.
It cannot be straightened amicably
unless Glass gets at least a shell of
